In early 1972, a consultant persuaded Intel founding member Andy Grove to consider the ideal location for Intel's first offshore assembly operation: Penang, Malaysia. The Intel team was impressed by Penang's location, workforce and the competency and support of local government. By November 1972, Intel had invested $1.6 million to start its first offshore assembly plant, known as A1, in the midst of a muddy paddy field. Initially, the workforce consisted of 100 batik-clad employees.
Intel Penang has grown to the fully integrated key assembly and testing site of today, with capabilities in assembly technology development, VLSI design, failure analysis, device physics, test tooling, technology development and marketing. Intel Penang, having just celebrated its 30-year anniversary, now consists of a high-tech campus with 10 buildings and 6,000 employees. It features a gym, cafeteria, sports courts and fields, an ATM and convenience store.

Malaysia is a tropical paradise situated seven degrees north of the Equator in the heart of Southeast Asia. Malaysia's closest neighbors are Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar. Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures and races, with a total population of 25 million people primarily of Malay, Chinese and Indian backgrounds.
Malaysia has some of the world's most diverse flora and fauna. Its tropical rain forests are among the oldest in the word, some dating back 130 million years. In the Peninsula there are over 8,000 species of trees, palms, flowers, ferns, fungus, orchids and other flowering plants, many of which thrive in the National Parks. Malaysia is also home to exotic animal life such as the orangutan, tiger, hornbill, proboscis monkey, scaly anteaters and tapirs.
Penang is a premier resort area. It boasts fine beaches, vibrant homes and plenty of convenient markets and pleasant gardens. Attractions include Fort Cornwallis in the center of Georgetown, Khoo Kongsi, a magnificent Chinese clan building, as well as many temples and the Penang Museum and Art Gallery. And sitting above it all, Penang Hill provides cool relief from the heat of the city below.
