INTEL SHANNON RECOGNISES OUTSTANDING FEMALE STUDENTS
September 29, 2006

Intel Shannon is encouraging the next generation of high achieving women to take up the challenge of a career in technology, through its “Women in Technology” scholarship programme. Each year the programme offers scholarships for female school leavers, valued at €2,000 each per annum. The scholarships are for female school leavers or female students already in specific designated undergraduate degree courses. The scholarship includes the opportunity to complete a work placements and/or summer internship at the Intel Shannon campus. In addition, each scholar will be assigned a mentor who will be an Intel employee who will provide advice and guidance as the student progresses through to graduation.
Through their involvement in the programme, Intel Shannon look forward to continuing to promote greater participation in technology courses at third level, especially for women who, at a national level, are still under represented in mathematics, engineering and science.
Intel Shannon’s General Manager Jonathan Walsh was pleased to present the scholarships to the first ever candidates. The winners are Eimear Morrissey, Co. Tipperary, studying Electrical Electronic and Microelectronic engineering in University College, Cork; Maryam Tahhan, Co. Limerick, studying Computer Systems in the University of Limerick and Dana Madigan, Co. Limerick, who has just completed her leaving certificate and is now in first year of Electronic Engineering in the University of Limerick also.
Speaking of the significance and merits of the programme offered, Jonathan said; “This is our first year awarding the scholarship and we are very proud to announce the high-achieving women who have been selected. For all of us in Ireland it is important that we don’t become complacent and assume that our continued economic success is guaranteed. A pipeline of well qualified graduates and post graduates predicates our ability to deliver a globally competitive knowledge based economy.”
Founded in 2000, the Intel Lab in Shannon has grown steadily from an initial 25 to 165 employees. Shannon provides a single integrated point of focus for Intel activity in embedded market segments in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The engineering teams in both silicon and software engineering have well established track records of disciplined, successful project execution on innovative products and have developed innovative Research and Development (R&D) methods that have been adopted at other Intel R&D teams around the world.
The team in Shannon is actively engaged with the local community through a number of initiatives, especially the promotion of science and technology in schools in the region and is active at a national level through promoting advanced technology research, sponsoring and facilitating activity in collaboration with some of Ireland’s leading universities guided by the support of the Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI).
