INTEL ENCOURAGES 150 LOCAL STUDENTS TO BECOME YOUNG SCIENTISTS

November 07, 2006

There was an action packed agenda which commenced with an informative and fun talk from Dr Tony Scott who founded the exhibition over 40 years ago. Next the students got the opportunity to participate in some exciting experiments performed by W5, a science promotion company based at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast.

Sheila Porter a teacher from Loretto College, Stephen’s Green in Dublin, who has won the Intel Educator Prize a number of times, went through a number of hints and tips on how to prepare and display projects. Finally the workshop concluded after Montse Boente from the Young Scientist office gave students information about online and postal application forms and closing dates for registration for the exhibition. Each of the speakers encouraged the students to enter projects in the exhibition, highlighting the different categories of projects, the prizes on offer, the great fun that students have at the exhibition itself, as well as the sense of pride and achievement they get from participating.

Gerry Nolan, Intel education specialist, who organised the event said, "Once again there has been a great attendance at this workshop and it was encouraging to see that so many of the students at the workshop are interested in participating in the exhibition; I am really looking forward to seeing the local schools represented at the exhibition and seeing these ideas come to life."

The schools who attended the workshop were: Confey College, Leixlip; St. Joseph's College, Lucan; Colaiste Padraig, Lucan; Salesian College, Celbridge and St Peter’s College, Dunboyne.
