How Intel promotes Innovation

Intel contributes to framing public policies and regulations that affect our industry and our business in Europe. But the really interesting work lies where Intel’s forward-thinking innovation agenda meets Europe’s Digital Agenda. We are driving efforts in Europe to help speed up the development and adoption of new technologies. Our goal is to promote the growth of new markets and increase access to solutions and services that enhance citizens’ daily lives.

Our public policy team engages with governments, industry stakeholders, and trade associations to promote policies that encourage innovation and support European competitiveness. With Intel and the European Union sharing a common progressive technology agenda, both are better poised for success in today’s knowledge-based global economy.

Our public policy work focuses on:

• Innovation, Intellectual Property and Standards

Intel is based on innovation. Innovation relies to a large extent on policies that reward and protect intellectual property. We therefore support policy efforts that encourage and protect innovation, and ensure a balanced intellectual property protection. Intel encourages innovation throughout the industry by forming, leading and contributing to a wide range of standards and specifications groups.

• Research and Key Enabling Technologies

Europe is a significant location for both Intel’s R&D and manufacturing. We are involved in formulating the research policies and engaged in European Union funded collaborative research. In order to ensure competitive conditions for semiconductor research and manufacturing in Europe, Intel contributes to the European Commission’s Key Enabling Technologies initiative.

• Broadband Communications

Broadband Internet communications, wired and wireless, is essential in today’s economies and societies. Investment in new networks and technologies must be encouraged by regulatory regimes. Radio spectrum is a key resource and its technology and service neutral use and tradability will spur innovation and growth of new wireless services and technologies.

Intel strives to be a leader in environmental protection and is committed to reducing its environmental footprint by working towards global goals and targets, often over and above compliance with regulatory requirements.

• Privacy and Security

Privacy and security are fundamental to developing trust in the digital economy. Intel supports technology neutral legislation that focuses on the appropriate use of personal data and targets inappropriate use. Intel designs in privacy so that the technology provides better user choice and control for handling of personal data. We also build a security foundation into our products.

• Digital Single Market for Content and Services

Over the last years, the Internet has become increasingly pervasive in our lives. Multimedia content is enjoyed and generated by consumers through a wide variety of devices. Fostering the growth of vibrant Digital Single Market requires striking the right balance between the interests of rightholders, publishers, distributors, consumers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and technology vendors.

Our industry is global in nature with regard to its markets, manufacturing, supply chain, R&D activities and employees. Intel therefore works proactively to remove technical and non-technical barriers to trade.
