Improving Algebra Teaching With TIMSS Research Learning From TIMSS Research

TIMSS Video Study Highlights
The TIMSS 1999 Video Study, directed by Dr. James Stigler and LessonLab, was a cross-national study that videotaped and analyzed teaching practices in more than one thousand eighth-grade classrooms from seven countries. The goal was to investigate whether educators from high-achieving nations all used the same teaching methods. Here are a couple of key findings:
  • No single method of teaching mathematics is required for students to achieve well
  • Much can be learned by examining a variety of teaching methods and searching for ways to engage students in serious mathematical work
