Who is Portwell?
Portwell is a leading provider of IPC components and an early visionary in the "Non-PC" market segment. Developing every thing from single board computers to highly specialized communication appliance platforms, Taiwan-based Portwell has targeted emerging CTI and Internet segments for its newest designs.

The Application:
EmbeddedATX (EmbATX) is a low-profile form factor specification for interactive client applications, including: kiosks, POS, ATM, thin clients, panel PCs, gaming and industrial applications, residential gateways, networking, media, storage and Web appliances.

Development Issues:
Because it was new, the EmbATX specification did not offer Portwell any reference designs or development tools. In addition, Portwell's first customer required very fast delivery of the new board. Working from scratch on an aggressive schedule, Portwell's designers had little margin for error. Key deliverables were challenging: low power consumption, high performance, extensive memory, dual independent display support, stability, and reliability.

The Solution:
Early collaboration between Intel, Portwell and an OEM customer - from planning and design to marketing - enabled fast time-to-market with an all-new, industry-leading solution. With support from Intel engineers, Portwell's highly experienced design team was able to finesse the product innovations without benefit of tools and reference materials.

Intel Components:
Intel® 852GME chipset with one of the following processors: Intel Pentium® 4 processor, Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor-M or Intel® Celeron® processor.

Why Intel?
Portwell chose embedded Intel architecture for its ability to meet the graphics-intensive, high performance requirements of the interactive segment - such as independent dual display with superior LCD. At the same time, Portwell points to Intel's long-term product roadmap, development support, and product reliability as key reasons for using Embedded Intel® architecture for its cutting edge board designs.

Results:
Portwell was one of the first companies to deliver an EmbATX board optimized for the interactive client segment.
