The Intel® 82543GC Gigabit Ethernet Controller is a highly integrated, high-performance, second-generation, Ethernet LAN controller for 1000Mbps, 100Mbps, and 10Mbps data rates. This device is targeted for Network Interface Card (NIC) designs, as well as for embedded applications that use Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus backplane. It provides a 32/64-bit, 33/66MHz interface compliant to PCI Rev 2.2.
The 82543GC provides an interface to the host processor by using on-chip command and status registers and a shared host memory area, set up mainly during initialization. The 82543GC provides a highly optimized architecture that delivers high performance and PCI
bus efficiency. The 82543GC minimizes I/O accesses and interrupts required to manage the device and provides a highly configurable design.
The 82543GC caches up to 64 packet descriptors in a single burst for efficient PCI bandwidth usage. In addition, the large 64KB packet buffer maintains high performance as available PCI bandwidth descriptors change.
