Who is Portwell*?
As one of the world's leading platform providers, Portwell* develops industrial computers and application platforms for a variety of customers worldwide. As an associate member of the Intel® Communications Alliance, Portwell uses standards-based Intel® building blocks to deliver a wide array of platforms and solutions for the ever-changing telecommunications, medical electronics, industrial automation, defense, and life automation segments.
The Application:
Fortinet's newest antivirus firewalls - the FortiGate*-5020, FortiGate*-5050, and FortiGate*-5140 - were developed for use by service providers and other telecom companies to deliver in-line, real-time network protection. The carrier-grade systems are believed to be the first network security solutions based on the new AdvancedTCA (ATCA) specification and offer scalability from 2 to 14 slots. Inside these first three ATCA-based systems is the FortiGate-5001antivirus firewall module, a platform board that delivers the ASIC-accelerated processing power for real-time antivirus, content filtering, intrusion prevention, VPN, firewall, anti-spam, and other integrated security functions that have made the FortiGate product line so successful.
Solution Summary:
Fortinet chose to base its newest network security systems on the AdvancedTCA specification to meet the density, availability and serviceability requirements of the telecommunications segment. Using a modular design, Fortinet can easily scale the solution as needed. Fortinet worked with Portwell to develop the system board in an effort to reduce development time and cost. This enabled Fortinet to focus most of its design resources on the company's feature-rich ASIC and the network security software that drives the system. Both Fortinet and Portwell preferred Intel components for their standards-based architecture, proven performance and reliable design. Because Fortinet's existing products use other embedded Intel® Architecture building blocks, choosing Intel further minimized the necessary development work.
Results:
Fortinet's FortiGate 5000 Series antivirus firewalls are believed to be the first ATCA-based network security systems available to both enterprise customers and service providers. Using the new ATCA platform specification along with board expertise from Portwell and reliable, standards-based, high-performance components from Intel enabled Fortinet to deliver an in-line security solution in half the usual development time, reducing the cost of design and bringing products to customers faster.
