Cyclone Microsystems* Case Study
PCI-736 Intelligent I/O Controller

Abstract:
Who is Cyclone Microsystems*?
Cyclone Microsystems designs and manufactures high-performance intelligent I/O controllers for embedded and real-time systems. Cyclone products are used to manage high-speed, real-time data flows and I/O protocol processing within complex telecommunications systems, medical imaging and industrial equipment.

The Application:
Elmic Systems develops embedded Internet networking protocol software for both IPv4 and IPv6 applications. Elmic solutions are designed from the ground up and are specifically intended for use in embedded systems, offering true zero copy and faster processing performance.
Development Issues:
Cyclone continually enhances its products to keep pace with the increasing performance demands of complex embedded applications. In these systems, huge data flows must be received, assigned, stored and accessed very quickly. To do this, Cyclone's products require components that can reliably deliver very high performance. While Gigabit Ethernet and component processing architectures have scaled to meet these demands, some of the available component technologies have not kept pace. For example, during development of its latest intelligent PCI I/O controller, Cyclone found that the native TCP/IP stack in it's preferred RTOS could not deliver the performance necessary for such data-intensive systems.
The Solution:
Cyclone tapped the high-performance advantages of Intel building blocks - including I/O processors with Intel XScaleŽ technology - plus highly efficient Intel PRO Gigabit Network Connections and Intel PCI bridges to achieve maximum hardware performance. To overcome the limitations of the native TCP/IP stack, Cyclone chose Elmic Systems Turbo Treck* IPv4, which offered true, zero copy performance and took advantage of the hardware offload features available with Intel silicon.
How Did Intel Help?
Cyclone chose Intel components for its solution because they are "the premier architecture for the embedded segment," says Peter Zackin, Vice President, Cyclone Microsystems. "The unique architecture of the Intel 21555 non-transparent PCI-to-PCI bridge, the high-performance/low-power capabilities of the Intel XScale microarchitecture, and the hardware offload features of the Intel PRO Gigabit Network Connections offered the best combined performance potential."
Results:
Putting Elmic's Turbo Treck TCP/IP stack together with Intel networking components enabled Cyclone to meet their performance objectives. Recent Gigabit Ethernet send tests conducted by Cyclone produced 600 Mbit/s TCP and 930 Mbit/s UDP, yielding TCP performance 465 percent greater than the performance achieved with the native TCP/IP stack.
