Abstract:
Who is ADLINK Technology*?
ADLINK Technology develops computer-based industrial applications, such as embedded computers, data acquisition cards, CompactPCI* systems, and related software. Through membership in the Intel® Communications Alliance, ADLINK closely aligns its innovative solutions with Intel's embedded roadmap to achieve faster time-to-market and lower development costs.
The Application:
Three embedded Intel Architecture components form a single foundation for two very different ADLINK solutions. The ADLINK
EM-64 module is a small, portable computing device delivering high performance with low power consumption and the flexibility to work with either 32-bit or 64-bit carrier board systems. In the ADLINK cPCI-6840 universal blade, the same Intel components deliver high throughput with low power consumption for telecom storage and networking applications.

Development Issues:
Throughout the embedded computing industry, "off-the-shelf" designs are rapidly gaining favor over traditional proprietary solutions for their ability to speed time-to-market while cutting development costs. Successful ODM/OEM businesses like ADLINK are taking advantage of this trend by designing core platforms that can be modified quickly and efficiently to deliver a variety of applications. At the same time, these designers must factor in ever-increasing demands for performance with lower power consumption.
The Solution:
ADLINK chose three tightly integrated, standards-based Intel Architecture components as the foundation for at least two of their core platforms. With little extra development effort, ADLINK can use these components to address a variety of requirements in multiple industries.
Featured Intel Components:
Intel® Pentium® M processor; Intel® 855GME chipset as north bridge; and the new 64-bit, PCI-X Intel® 6300ESB I/O controller hub as south bridge.

As the only existing low power processing solution to perform above 1 GHz, the Intel Pentium M processor enables ADLINK to quickly and efficiently produce a variety of embedded boards, blades and modules that can be used in a wide variety of applications.
Results:
Using a single platform built on standards-based, pre-integrated Intel Architecture components enables ADLINK to cut development time by half for prototype designs, with the ability to scale to volume production with little additional effort. The resulting efficiencies can be passed along to customers via faster time-to-market, lower design costs, and more innovative solutions.
