D-Link recently introduced two new wireless storage devices for the digital home. The D-Link* DSM-622* and DSM-624* will offload media storage from the PC while enabling users to store and share information, play music, and archive digital photography and videos. A single D-Link wireless network storage device can serve an entire household, business, or office. |
|
There are few existing storage solutions that adequately meet the needs of the digital home. The optimum solution delivers all of the networking functionality available in enterprise-level Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices in a package that fits the ad-hoc personality of most home networks. To this end, D-Link set forth several design requirements for its newest storage solutions:
- Seamless compatibility and interoperability among multiple computing and media systems (including devices based on Windows* XP and Me, Mac* OS X, and Linux)
- Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP*) capability for ease of use among a non-technical customer base, and UPnP-AV* capability for compatibility between computing and AV devices
- The option to choose either wired or wireless connectivity for portability and versatility, enabling a single device to serve an entire home or small business network
- Network access so that multiple users could store and share digital files simultaneously, without degrading overall performance
- Wire-speed throughput for efficient transfer of large, digital files
- Compact form factor for maximum versatility in the home or small office
- Scalability via an external USB port so that storage can easily be extended through external storage drives

Intel's network processor enabled D-Link to deliver its wireless network storage solution with a single-chip platform, saving board space and development work, as well as speeding time to market. The efficient Intel® IXP420 network processor integrates multiple networking options, including USB, WLAN, 10/100 Ethernet, and a PCI interface for storage extension options. What's more, the processor's design is ideal for maximizing throughput of large digital files without degrading the overall network. |

D-Link's wireless storage devices required a robust modern operating system for optimum performance. Fully compatible with the Intel XScale® architecture of the IXP420 network processor, the MontaVista* Linux Professional Edition comes application-ready, cutting down on D-Link's development time. |
