| Enabling digital - on the go |
|
More and more consumers value access to digital entertainment and productivity tools during the hours they spend in their car. The mainstream availability of discrete GPS navigation systems, roadside assistance services, smartphones, digital radio, DVD video and MP3-based systems is whetting the appetite of media-savvy consumers for richer on-board content and a full range of digital capabilities.
In-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems offer a new generation of ultra-compact embedded computing and communication platforms, providing occupants of a vehicle with the same degree of connectivity and the same access to digital media and data that they currently enjoy in their home or office. These systems are also designed with an all-important difference in mind: they are designed to provide an integrated, upgradeable control point that serves not only the driver, but the individual needs of all vehicle occupants.
Using standards-based building blocks, Intel is driving both OEM and after-market solutions of front-end navigation systems, hands-free communication and rear-seat information and entertainment into today's vehicles, with growing performance and features on each new generation.

Broadly defined, in-vehicle infotainment refers to all the digital applications that can be used by all occupants of a vehicle. It can include all or a subset of the following capabilities:
Internal connectivity:
Consisting of a cellular phone, PDA, MP3 player, etc., that works in conjunction with the vehicle's audio system in the car, often including Bluetooth* wireless connectivity for hands free control; also includes connectivity to internal automotive busses.
Navigation and location-based services:
GPS-based 2-D and 3-D map displays with route and directional information, points of interest and other location-based information
Entertainment:
DVD video, digital audio, gaming and TV
External communications:
Wi-Fi* wireless networking or WiMAX* wireless broadband, providing connections to the Internet for digital office and digital home applications and services
Radio:
Standard AM/FM radio with CD player, which can be enhanced by satellite digital radio services
Intel meets these application requirements by delivering scalable, flexible, energy efficient processing for embedded and mobile solutions. The solutions are based on a common architecture and standards-based building blocks so that auto manufacturers can quickly develop, deploy and upgrade their IVI systems.
