The Application:
Digital-Logic smartModules* make it possible to easily, quickly and inexpensively integrate complex PC technology into customer-specific product designs. The use of smartModule PCs in the development of new products not only minimizes overall design efforts and development costs but also can dramatically reduce time to market.
The Need:
Digital-Logic sought to extend its high-performance smartModule series with a new module for embedded industrial applications. The key design challenges: Fast, scalable performance, low power consumption to support fanless operation and the smallest possible size.
The Solution:
The Intel® Pentium® M processor platform proved the best fit for the new smartModule SM855 from Digital-Logic. Based on the Intel® 855GME chipset with a 400MHz front-side bus, the module employs a Pentium M processor and reaches performance levels comparable to a 3.4GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor.
Why Intel?
Digital-Logic finds that Intel Pentium M and Celeron® M processors offer numerous advantages for small-form-factor fanless embedded industrial designs, including Intel SpeedStep® Technology for efficient energy use, multiple processor options to support scalability, and highly integrated functionality for high performance.
The Results:
Digital-Logic's SM855 product was hailed as the smallest Intel Pentium M processor-based computer module for industrial applications when it debuted in 2004. According to Digital-Logic, the benefits of Intel processor technology go beyond stability, power efficiency, scalability and performance. Namely, the standard interfaces and uniform driver support implemented in Intel mobile processors help ensure that software development costs stay within reason. Equally important, the assured long-term availability of Intel processors and chipsets in the embedded line provides Digital-Logic with investment security for future products.
