Creo* Case Study
Creo Masters the Variable Data Intrinsic to On-Demand Digital Printing

Abstract:
Who is Creo*?
Creo, Inc. is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of pre-press equipment, including printing plates, professional digital cameras, scanning systems, halftone proofers, variable information workflow systems, and computer-to-film and computer-to-plate devices. Creo is also an OEM supplier of on-press imaging technology, components for digital presses, and color servers for high-speed, on-demand digital printers.
Related Information
The Application:
The Creo Spire* color server is a controller/driver for high-performance Xerox DocuColor* printers and presses. Designed specifically to manage the workflow in variable information printing, Spire color servers perform at very high speeds to match the performance of Xerox’s premium, high-output digital printers and presses.
The Need:
On-demand printing often involves variable content, modifying the output from one printed item to the next. This continuously changing data puts a large burden on the front end controller, since the flow of data must keep pace with the speed of today’s high-speed presses – as many as 110 pages per minute. This requires a high-performance processing platform that offers fast throughput of large files as well as robust memory to support a high volume of variable data.
The Solution:
Creo Spire color print servers are designed specifically for variable information printing. Creo’s patented workflow technology ensures speedy, efficient handling of large, variable print jobs. Maximum throughput of large format files is delivered via a highly integrated, embedded Intel® IOP331 I/O processor with the PCI-X interface.
Why Intel?
Creo chose the Intel IOP331 I/O processor for its ability to deliver very high throughput needed for digital imaging. Everything about the Intel IOP331 I/O processor is fast – core frequency, memory access, internal bus (PCI-X) and access to peripherals. With important features integrated onto the processor – including the DDR controller and the PCI-X bridge – the IOP331 met all of Creo’s performance and design requirements.
Results:
Creo delivered the newest generation of Spire color servers on time and on budget – crediting the Intel IOP331 I/O processor for helping the company to achieve both metrics. “Board space was really important, and the integrated design of the Intel chip enabled our design on a PCI-type board,” explains Benjamin Shimshoni, Marketing Manager, Creo Print-on-Demand Systems Group. “That saved us development time and made our design more cost-effective.” What’s more, beta testing of the IOP331 coincided with Creo’s development cycle for design and testing efficiencies, and faster time-to-market.
