Intel® 840 Chipset: 82840 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) Datasheet
The Intel(R) 840 chipset is a high-bandwidth chipset designed for workstation and server systems based on Intel(R) Pentium(R) II processor / Intel(R) Pentium(R) III processor architectures. The chipset contains two main components: the 82840 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) and the Integrated Controller Hub 82801 (ICH). An optional 82806 64-bit PCI Controller Hub (P64H) component provides expansion capability. In addition, a system BIOS chip (sold seperately by Intel and other vendors) is also required. The 82840 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) provides the system bus interface, memory controller, AGP interface, hub interface for IJO, and hub interface for PCI bus expansion. This document describes the 82840 Memory Controller Hub (MCH). Section 1.1, Intel(R) 840 Chipset System Architecture, provides an overview of each of the components of the Intel(R) 840 chipset.
