Needed: One Box with Many Capabilities
In addition to Video-on-Demand, Internet services and networked personal digital media, Handan also needed a platform designed to accommodate the European DVB standard for satellite, cable and terrestrial digital video. Subsidized retail distribution is a popular option with many broadcasters and service providers in Europe, and Handan needed a platform to meet the following requirements:
Handling both cable/broadband and digital broadcast in a single integrated design
Meeting customer-service delivery targets at an affordable price point
Enabling the addition of PVR functionality
Allowing consumers to share personal media with PCs and networked devices
Providing the processing performance to handle next-generation digital-media applications
Why Handan Chose Intel® Architecture

For its Zenega* Home Media Center (HMC) Handan chose an Intel® Architecture-based IP-DSTB platform based on the Intel® Celeron® processors and the Intel® 830M4 chipset.

"We moved to Intel® Architecture for three reasons: better technical support, the higher performance of Intel® processors, and Intel's CE product roadmap." -K.W. Jeong, Director of Research and Development, Handan BroadInfoCom

Handan has showcased the HMC set top box product and reports it is gaining good traction with service providers, including a recently announced agreement with German service provider T-Online* International, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom* and one of Europe's largest Internet service providers. The Handan HMC set top box platform will support T-Online Vision* services including VoD and consumer portals for news, entertainment and e-mail displayed on the user's television.

"Handan is competitive with other solutions for three primary reasons:

  1. Fast time-to-market for the set top box solution
  2. The flexibility of IP VoD plus DVD and digital broadcast in a single box
  3. The ability to implement value-added features, including PVR." -K.W. Jeong, Director of Research and Development, Handan BroadInfoCom
