Intel® In-Vehicle Networking
Engine Today's vehicles contain hundreds of circuits and sensors, miles of wiring and numerous other electrical components. To reduce wiring requirements, automotive components are increasingly networked via serial communication protocols. Two of the most popular protocols are the SAEJ1850 and the Controller Area Network (CAN).

Intel supports CAN specification 2.0 with the 82527 stand-alone CAN device in addition to two integrated 16-bit microcontrollers, the 87C196CA and the 87C196CB.
