Unit Summary
This unit examines what makes an ideal tourist location, focusing on South Africa as a tourist destination.

Curriculum Framing Questions
Critical Question:
What sustains a country economically?
Unit Questions:
What makes a good tourist spot?

Instructional Procedures
  1. Introductory discussion centres on questions such as What is tourism.
    What tourist attractions are very popular amongst visitors?
    Where can visitors stay?
    What important facts on South Africa need to be provided to potential visitors?
    This can be done in groups and there is a discussion worksheet to assist.
  2. Students then discuss the unit question and engage in information research (Internet, Subject literature, Electronic Encyclopaedia)
  3. Students are given the following task that is explained in the form of a website.
    You have received a scholarship to visit any school of your choice as an exchange student in America. During your visit, you will need to:
    • Hand out a brochure with tips for tourists visiting our country, and
    • Publish a web-site on popular tourist destinations in South Africa, pretending you own a touring agency.
    A sample assessment tool for teachers to accumulate scores for the project is available on an excel spread sheet.

Computer /Word Processing/ Internet Skills (MSOffice)

Differentiated Instruction
Differentiated instruction and assessment plus extended work time.
Some resources to be available in learners' first language, use of alternative ways to demonstrate learning.
