This unit examines the impact that the Olympic Games has on promoting peace in the world. Curriculum Framing Questions
Instructional Procedures Task 1 Project Instructions. Overview for learners. The learners should be divided into groups of four for this project on the Olympic Games. This Project Task 1 is a pair and share activity and requires that two group members work together. Their task is to discover as much as they can about the Olympic Games that are to be held in Greece this year. They include the Paralympics in their research. They also find out how the Olympic Games began and how they were conducted in Ancient Greece. See the learner support document. Encourage them to try to find as many new and unique facts as possible. In this task they find answers to the following questions firstly as they relate to the Ancient Olympic Games and then as they relate to the 2004 Games wherever possible. The pair use the Project I journal to record answers. They should make a note of the websites they visit by completing the Bibliography as they work. Sample bibliography. They should examine the Peer Assessment Rubric before they start as they will assess one another using this rubric. Task 2 In this task they find answers to the following questions firstly as they relate to the Ancient Olympic Games and then as they relate to the 2004 Games. They should be encouraged to use keywords and phrases in their journal.
The learners work in the same groups of four and use Microsoft PowerPoint to construct a multimedia presentation of between 10 and 15 slides. A sample of such a presentation can be viewed. This show should answer the unit question about the Olympic Games. They plan the content using a storyboard handout. They use the information gained from the Internet Research completed in Task 1. One slide should contain a map of Ancient Greece. The learners may use effects once they have completed their content. The learners use the Multimedia Presentation Assessment Rubric to guide them in this task. They also use the Task 2 Presentation Group Assessment Rubric to assess one another. In a 4-page newsletter the learners write about a visit to the 2004 Olympic Games. A sample can be viewed. They discuss what they see and the various activities and functions that are taking place. They talk about what they are learning from the experience. The learners need to have eight relevant headings to write about for this task. Let the groups brainstorm for relevant headings. Relevant graphics should be inserted. They use the Publication Assessment Rubric to guide them in their task as well as a storyboard template. Task 4 The learners' website. A sample learner's website may be viewed. The learners work in a group of four for this activity. In this activity they are required to construct a six-page website which compares and contrasts the Modern and Ancient Olympic Games and evaluates their contributions to the world. They may use this storyboard. Let the learners use the following headings for their website: 1) A Home Page in which they state the purpose of the website. 2) Origins Page. Discuss the origins of the Ancient and the Modern Olympic Games. Talk about the values and mission of the Olympics through time. 3) Location Page. Talk about where the original Olympics were held and where the Olympics have been held since then. Draw a timeline to illustrate your data. Sample timeline. 4) Participants Page. Who is allowed to enter the Olympics Games and visit the Olympics? 5) Sports page. Mention which sports are offered. 6) Evaluation page. Has the Olympics contributed to unifying our world? Give reasons for your answers. The learners need to use the Task 4 Website Assessment Rubric to guide them in this task. As you walk around in this activity notice which groups are excelling in this task. Hand those the certificate for website development at the end of the Task. - see sample. Prerequisite Skills For Task 1 To do task 1 the learners must know.
In order to complete task 2 the learners need to:
4) Participants Page. Who is allowed to enter the Olympics Games and visit the Olympics? 5) Sports page. Mention which sports are offered. 6) Evaluation page. Has the Olympics contributed to unifying our world? Give reasons for your answers. The learners need to use the Task 4 Website Assessment Rubric to guide them in this task. In order to do task 3 the learners need to know.
In order to complete this 4th task learners will need to:
Modified requirements, differentiated instruction and assessment, extended work time, guiding templates, support structures etc. Let the second language speakers who you know will struggle with this activity be paired with a stronger learner for assistance. They will still complete their own work. Take time to explain things to this learner so that vocabulary is built up. he advanced learner can be used to aid other learners. When placing the learners in groups make sure that each group has an advanced learner in it. Give the advanced learner further tasks when necessary. For example they could construct a timeline of the various Olympic Games down the ages. They can also use a search engine to find further websites. Suggested search engines are: Google.com; Alta Vista search.com; Webcrawler.com; Yahoo.com 1) minbar.cs.dartmouth.edu/greecom/olympics* 2) www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ancientgreece/classics/olympics/intro.shtml* 3) education.nmsu.edu/webquest/wq/olympics/Textref.html* The learners need to have Microsoft FrontPage loaded on to their computers.
