Unit Summary
This is a Grade 1 unit of work. Learners observe people in their community and consider what work they do. They are then asked to choose what career they would like to follow when they leave school.

Instructional Procedures
Before embarking on the project please read through the educator presentation and the Implementation Plan.

Introducing the theme
This theme is introduced in the classroom with a lot of discussion: "Careers - what I want to be when I grow up!" Pictures and posters should be used to show various professions visually. Research: Children have to go home and find out what their parents do for a living. Then they report back to the class.

Week One:
The theme is introduced as a class discussion.
Learners look at photos and discuss community helpers.
Learners talk to parents at home and find out what they do, if they had to study, etc. (research)
Learners report back to class - they can show pictures Learners work through various theme sheets in their books on careers/community helpers.
Ongoing research:Learners interview a community helper in their lives - e.g. their doctor or dentist or postman.
They need to find out why they love their job and anything interesting about their career.
Learners must take a photograph or draw a picture of the person they interviewed.

At the computer:
Learner support material 1
In their groups they do the Community Helpers matching worksheet.
Then they use Learner support material 2

Week Two:
Learners discuss what they would like to be when they grow up.
Learners must find out about their career in class (books) and at home. (research)
Learners write about what they would like to be and why.

At the computer:
Learners each make a page in Powerpoint using the decided format. (click to see presentation)
Cool clip art is made available to learners - pictures of the following people are provided
dentists
doctors
teachers
vets
Policemen
Learners use the presentation assessment worksheet to assess their presentation.

Week Three:
Guest speakers come to the class to tell the learners about their careers (e.g a doctor comes to talk to the learners about what you need to do to become a doctor and why he wanted to be a doctor and other things about the job.
Learners discuss what you need to do for different professions (go to university/college/apprenticeship)
Learners decide on the information they will use in their brochure.
Learners write their brochure information.
Friday - Learners dress up as someone in an occupation they admire.

At the computer:
Learners design and create their brochure.
Learners use the publication assessment worksheet to assess their brochure.

Week Four:
Learners report back on the community helpers that they have interviewed.
Learners find out about interesting 'alternative' careers through class discussions and books. (research)
Learners go on outing to Kiddies Campus where they get to dress up and play at different professions.
Learners are put into groups to write up their part of the website (teacher assigns task).
Learners present their work to the class and other Grade Ones and teachers.
Learners reflect on why their chosen career is important.

At the computer:
Learners add their contributions to each groups webpage.
Learners reflect on their learning.
Learners assess their website using the Cool Careers website assessment worksheet.

Differentiated Instruction
