Video Encoding Acceleration Solution: Intel® Atom™ Processor E6xx

Executive Summary
This paper introduces the video encode acceleration capability of the Intel® Atom™ processor E6xx System-on-Chip. In this paper, necessary detail on hardware capability is presented along with information on the software stack including operating system, graphics drivers, middleware, and applications required to demonstrate hardware accelerated video encode.

The Intel Atom processor E6xx is capable of providing high compression, high quality, real time video encode functionality along with great user experience when other applications are in use on the device. Software-based video encoding on the other hand consumes more power, hogs host CPU bandwidth, doesn’t retain quality of video and takes longer time to encode a HD video on the same device.

The Intel Atom processor E6xx features a multi-standard HD video encode hardware accelerator which provides high picture quality, high speed, low power consumption and low host CPU load based on the Intel Atom microarchitecture. These key attributes are primary for embedded devices supporting video encoding applications. Video encoding is a key feature for space savings and retaining quality of video when recording and compressing video data from a camera or trans-code media content from one format to another. The usage model for video encoding spans across multiple embedded market segments including IP Media Phones, In-Vehicle Infotainment, Digital Health, IP Services and Video Surveillance.
