Will Desktops Ever Move to the Cloud? Newsflash: Mine is *Already* a Cloud Desktop. And So is Yours.
Will desktops ever move to the cloud? Brian Madden says they’re already there. In this blog post from brianmadden.com, Madden argues that the “traditional” desktop should also be considered a cloud desktop. Much like a desktop scenario using virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), today’s traditional desktop is already cloud-based because of where the data sits.
Much like many users, Madden relies on multiple computers regularly: a laptop, a work desktop, and a home desktop. He explains that his work desktop is worthless without the cloud, and it’s more than a backup-and-restore scenario. Because of smart synchronization that is application-specific, continuous, and bidirectional, there is a “master” copy of everything in the cloud. According to Madden, “people will get into arguments about whether this is a ‘real’ cloud desktop or not. But here's what's important: It's 2012, and it doesn't matter. There is no difference between a ‘cloud desktop’ and a ‘virtual desktop’ and a ‘traditional desktop.’ They all overlap.”
