Online Learning: An Open Course to Success

A seismic shift is taking place in higher education, and it’s in no small part due to the affordability and speed of today’s new computers. Online learning—whether for an accredited degree, a certificate course, or an ancillary program—is helping a fast-growing number of students and professionals achieve their educational goals. And amazingly, many of these courses are free!

The Coursera program has grown to more than sixty universities and higher education institutions, including such heavy hitters as Princeton University, Berkeley College of Music, The University of Edinburgh, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Coursera offers free online courses in fields ranging from engineering and medicine to business and the arts. With a broad representation of international universities, many of the courses will be offered in Chinese, Spanish, French, and Italian, in addition to English.

And thanks to Intel® products like the new Ultrabook™, which combines the convenience of a tablet with the power of a laptop, and the all-in-one PC with its super-sleek design and incredible computing speed, the fast track to your success can start at your desk at home or your favorite study spot with Wi-Fi.

Eye Opening Results

Over six million students chose online education—an increase of more than half a million from the previous year! The doors to online learning via massive open online courses (MOOCs) are opening wider every day as the list of higher education institutions offering free online courses is quickly growing to include the world’s best universities.

For those looking to increase their knowledge of science, tech, engineering, and math (STEM)-related subjects, there’s the edX program. A team effort of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, edX offers free online courses and recently announced its collaboration with six more stellar institutions, including McGill University, Rice University, the University of Toronto, the Australian National University, and Georgetown University.

Today’s academic leaders, educators, and employers realize that online learning is a valuable and efficient way to share the resources of modern higher educational institutions with students and professionals.
