Unable to Run Secure Erase on Intel® SSD Toolbox

Last Reviewed: 04-Oct-2016
Article ID: 000006312

The Intel® SSD Toolbox User Guide states that after plugging the SSD data cable in, and clicking Refresh, that Secure Erase can be started.

But, even if the system BIOS is set to AHCI, the following error can occur: ATA Security is enabled. Secure Erase cannot run until security is disabled.

To resolve the issue, make sure that you have Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) installed in the system:

  1. Install Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST).
  2. In Windows 7*, click Start, click Run, type services.msc and click Enter.
  3. Change Intel® Rapid Storage Technology settings from Automatic (delay) to Automatic.
  4. Reboot the system.
  5. Run Secure Erase on the Intel SSD Toolbox. The refresh rate should be faster when plugging in the SSD.
