The Intel® Pentium® M Processor is available as a boxed processor for laptop computers in the micro-FCPGA form factor. The electronic device may seriously damage the installer, system, and processor if installed improperly. Intel recommends a computer professional installs the processor.
|Note||Do not use an Intel Pentium M processor in a desktop system and do not use a desktop processor in an Intel Pentium M Processor laptop. Since these processors have different electrical specifications, damage to the processor and system can occur.|
- Make sure that your system can accommodate the Intel Pentium M processor that you want to install. Check for motherboard, BIOS, and thermal compatibility by using the manufacturer's documentation for the laptop computer, or by contacting the vendor. This processor should only be installed in systems supporting the Intel Pentium M Processor.
Important Notes: Do not use a Intel Pentium M processor in a desktop system and do not use a desktop processor in a Intel Pentium M Processor notebook. Since these processors have different electrical specifications, damage to the processor and system can occur.
- Obtain access to your processor socket as described in the documentation for your system.
- If the cooling solution prevents you from accessing the processor socket, you may need to remove it. Instructions on how to remove your cooling solution should be provided in the documentation that came with the system.
- To uninstall the current processor, use a screwdriver to disengage (open) the socket actuator, as shown in Figure 1 below. (The most commonly used sockets are Molex* or FoxConn* sockets, so they are used in the illustrations below.) The socket actuator should open after only a half turn or so, and you should then be able to remove the processor with your fingers.

- Using the method shown in Figure 2, place the new processor into the socket. Align the processor's pin A1 with the arrow on the micro-FCPGA socket. The pin A1 of the processor is identified with an embroidered corner and the pin A1 of the socket is identified with a small arrow. If the processor does not drop completely into the socket, turn the actuator until the processor drops completely in.
Note You should not have to press down on the processor. If the processor does not drop completely into the socket, turn the actuator until the processor drops completely in.

- While gently holding the processor down with your finger, secure the processor in the socket by closing the socket actuator with a screwdriver (See Figure 1).
- Reattach the cooling system, and reassemble the system per documentation that came with the system.
- Your system may require special voltage and speed settings for the new processor to function correctly. Some systems are auto-configuring, while others are set with jumpers, dip-switches, or within the CMOS setup program. Consult your system manufacturer's documentation to determine the correct settings.
- Install the cooling system properly, following the installation manual. If the laptop OEM documentation specifies to use a piece of thermal interface material, a new piece must be applied. Since the thermal interface material varies from computer to computer, you must get the material from the laptop vendor.
