The following adapters support promiscuous mode:

  • Intel® PRO/100 Adapter
  • Intel® PRO/1000 Gigabit Server Adapter
  • Intel® Gigabit Network Adapter
  • Intel® PRO/10 Gigabit
  • Intel® 10 Gigabit Server Adapter

A network management agent or other software such as a network sniffer tells the OS to turn on the promiscuous mode support. You need a network management agent because users cannot enable/disable the support.

Note In some cases, you need to ensure tagged Ethernet frames are passed up without stripping the tags. Change the settings of the OS running the packet capture software.
