Deliver Low-Cost, High-IOPS VM Datastores on Nexenta*, Intel® SSD
The purpose of this document is to give IT professionals instruction on how to construct a purpose-built high-IOPS, low-cost Storage Area Network (SAN) using off-the-shelf Intel components, the Nexenta* software stack, and VMware ESXi* 5.1. This software-based storage solution is specifically targeted at highly dense virtual environments that interleave VM I/O resulting in a mostly random I/O demand, also known as the I/O Blender. This document steps through basic installation and setup of hardware, Nexenta* software, and connection of NFS datastores at the VMware host system to NFS shares on a Nexenta* server.
In addition, this document explains a best known method for hardware and NFS setup in Nexenta* software for optimal performance as a VM datastore using Intel® 10 Gigabit Ethernet Controllers and Intel® Solid-State Drive Data Center S3500 Series (Intel® SSD DC S3500 Series) products.
