The concept of Intelligent Everything reflects a world where sensitivity and responsiveness are built into those objects that we all interact with everyday—with widespread interconnections linking them all. As a part of this vision, intelligent devices—from smartphones and tablets to sensors that simulate our five senses—can instantaneously access vital information and apply context and intelligence to it, learning our behaviors and preferences so that over time they become trusted guides and invaluable personal assistants.
Information gathering and processing is automatic, in the background, and keyed to individual preferences and needs. And, ultimately, the goal is to increase the intelligence and decision-making capabilities of these interconnected things, creating unique, comprehensive solutions and services—far beyond anything that has been yet developed in the industry.
To achieve this vision, Intel Labs sees a progression through these stages:
- Enable the industry and players to embed intelligence where it makes sense: Sensors and embedded computers can harvest data from a wide variety of objects that we interact with daily. This can include more than just our smartphone or Ultrabooks, to encompass retail items, eyeglasses, sportswear, appliances, automobile dashboards, energy systems, exercise equipment, traffic signs, bicycles, thermostats, and so on. Once this foundation is established, useful data can be captured.
- Connect devices where it adds value: Building on the foundation once it is established, we can create connections among intelligent devices—the “things” that together form the Internet of Things. If the GPS in your car can access your calendar app and ToDo list, as well as your refrigerator inventory, you can get a reminder while driving home that you need to pick up a prescription from the pharmacy and stock up on ingredients for a planned recipe. Shared data can enhance daily activities with reminders and guidance.
- Create useful services from the interconnected intelligent devices: Built-in intelligence in sensors and devices can filter, re-arrange, and extract useful information from massive amounts of data and use it to create valuable services. In combination with stored knowledge—your personal information—computing devices are better able to adapt to your needs and preferences. As the Intelligent Everything vision becomes a deeper part of our everyday lives, the capabilities of everything around us can be layered with rich, responsive interactions. Meaningful decisions can be guided by a network of sensitive, intelligent devices, interacting and sharing vital information about our activities, environment, and communities.
In this spirit, Intel Labs strives to break down the barriers between people and the spaces they inhabit. With linked and responsive computing intelligence, we can build a relationship of two-way communication that strengthens and enhances everyone’s lives within a supportive, sensitive, and adaptable environment.
