Optimizing Assets, Operations, and the Workforce with Smart Manufacturing

Smart manufacturing is bringing information technology (IT) to the factory floor, making better use of data and computing power to increase efficiency across assets, operations, and the workforce. Examples include predictive maintenance solutions to increase asset uptime, edge analytics to improve operational decision-making and smart helmets to ensure the environment is safe for workers.

Intel has been serving the manufacturing industry for over thirty years with industrial-grade, extended-lifecycle products that can withstand harsh environments and deliver deterministic performance. This includes a portfolio of processor, chipset, networking, software, and security products. Now, Intel and ecosystem partners are developing end-to-end IoT solutions that bring a new level of automation and computerization to manufacturing.

At Hannover Messe, Intel, along with ecosystem partners, will showcase the IoT-based solutions that manufacturers can adopt in order to realize the benefits of smart manufacturing.

A Preview of Intel Demos at Hannover Messe

Demo Description
Dell Edge Gateway* Dell Edge Gateway 5000 series on Intel® Atom™ processor digitizes manufacturing processes across the connected manufacturing value chain enabling real-time intelligent decisions that drive operation and energy efficiency, predictive maintenance applications, and cost savings.
Accenture Connected Asset Management—Digital Oil Field A secure IoT solution that enables enterprises to proactively manage their assets and make more informed decisions through the enablement and unlocking of digital content, edge analytics, and prescriptive communications.
PMQi*: Predictive Maintenance and Quality Solution from ADLINK, IBM, and Intel A smart manufacturing solution that will optimize machine performance, prevent unplanned downtime and improve Operating Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) by predicting when assets are going to fail, and identify quality concerns before they  become a problem.
DAQRI Smart Helmet* Save lives and improve environmental, health, and safety compliance with this wearable Human Machine Interface (HMI) that captures and displays real-time contextual worker and environmental data to optimize operational and safety workflows, giving the worker the information where they need it, when they need it.
SAS Analytics at the Edge The SAS Event Stream Processing Engine* on Intel® architecture allows industrial organizations to sense the right thing, share the right thing, and do the right thing. Whether on the edge, in the cloud, or at the numerous points in between, SAS scales to analyze millions of events per second. Data in motion can be analyzed with the same efficacy as data at rest, enabling right-time decisions to reduce costs, empower new revenue streams, and enhance profitability in organizations deluged with sensor data.
Predix*, GE's Cloud Platform for the Industrial Internet Predix* is a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) for developing, deploying, and monetizing Industrial Internet applications. Highly optimized for the unique and demanding requirements of industrial apps, Predix works with operating assets from any vendor or vintage.
Vibration Analytics for Predictive Maintenance A continuous machine monitoring solution that uses vibration data to predict machine failure.  Machine learning algorithms allow users to train the system to identify which conditions are normal and out of band for each machine.
Functional Safety Intel showcases the first ‘fit-for-purpose’ functional safety solution that allows the developer ecosystem to develop, deploy, and support mixed criticality workloads (safe and non-safe) on a certified platform.
Altera Smart Factory The award-winning Altera cloud-enabled PLC* reference platform demonstrates a simulated smart factory environment that showcases motion control, EtherCAT*, HMI, and secure enterprise communication over OPC-UA. Half the size of a credit card, this micro system-on-module provides an example of how quickly a flexible and scalable Industrial 4.0-ready PLC with integrated HMI can be developed and deployed.
Wind River Software Defined Automation The Wind River Helix* portfolio provides an interoperable, scalable, and modular architecture tailored to address the system-level challenges facing today’s Industry 4.0 challenges.  The demo will showcase how software defined automation solutions enable manufacturers to analyze data in real time, improving operational work flows and cost savings.
Time-Coordinated Computing Can you deliver the right data, at the right time, every time?  This motion control demonstration will highlight how Intel’s building block architecture integrates with our ecosystem partners’, Cisco and National Instruments, solutions to deliver real-time assessment and adjustment capabilities ensuring precision control for time-sensitive industrial applications.
