In-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems play an increasingly larger part of consumer vehicle purchasing decisions. Consumers expect more built-in functionality and plug-in connectivity, along with superb graphics performance. To be competitive, automotive manufacturers must offer IVI systems with seamless integration between home, office, and car—including access to e-mail, Internet, music, videos, news, and navigation information. To minimize development costs and time, developers and auto manufacturers must leverage an Open Infotainment Platform (OIP), maximizing generation-to-generation reuse. OIP is a standards-based, low-power, scalable, and highly flexible platform that enables rapid development and simplified upgrades. Intel’s broad hardware and software ecosystem, including members of the Intel® Intelligent Systems Alliance, provide a single source for an extensive range of development and design options.
The low power Intel® In-Vehicle Infotainment Reference Design (Intel® IVI Reference Design) incorporates a variety of features including an Intel® Atom™ processor E660T. It also includes an IVI-based IOH that provides specific automotive functions, up to 2 GB DDR2 memory, 4 GB eMMC storage, SPI BIOS, and power control and clocking. It comes with complete schematics and layout files to simplify development and speed time-to-market. A small footprint, efficient thermal design, and compact I/O interfaces fit into a standard, single DIN slot, making it ideal for IVI applications. Low power characteristics of the Intel® Atom™ processor E660T-based platform allow a fanless thermal solution, eliminating noise and reliability concerns.
