Executive Summary
To allow for manufacturability, via selection for BGA package has to follow strict criteria by taking into account several key specifications. Examples of these specifications include Desktop and Mobile PCB Design Guide by Intel, Intel® DFx Rule, and ECG Reliability Requirements.

With manufacturing capabilities constantly improving, we must ask ourselves if these documents are updated frequently enough, or are they limiting the options we have available because they may include assumptions that are no longer valid. Another question is, do we get the best performance and optimal benefits by adhering to these specifications? By taking the Queens Bay and Navy Cove boards as an example, we will show that by challenging a conventional 10:20:28 via size and instead using a 8:15:24, we can yield optimized performance at a minimal cost increase of approximately 7 percent.

This approach also opens up new opportunities for the embedded market, where customized form factors for the customer reference boards are a norm due to its nature of use. One example is the IVI market, in which it has to be small yet have a life span of greater than five years. Various factors have to be considered for selection of a non-conforming via size, all the way from the obvious form factor of the design to finer details such as the power delivery network of the system.
