Data Analysis Make Decisions with Data

Big Idea

How can you evaluate alternatives and make a choice? You administered a survey and created a well-designed database for your data. When you analyze data, you can evaluate possibilities and make a choice for almost any decision. You can create charts to help you evaluate possibilities and make a choice by visualizing, or visually representing, relationships among your data. Learn how to create forms and queries to manage your survey database. Use a spreadsheet application to analyze your data with formulas and functions, and represent your data visually with charts.

In this module:

  • Create a form for entering data into your survey database
  • Create queries to retrieve survey data that informs your decision
  • Analyze your survey data and evaluate alternative choices
  • Learn how to read and interpret different kinds of charts
  • Create charts that help you to visualize your evaluation and choice

Activity 1: Database Forms >

Can you think of some databases you have used? Most databases have forms that format information from the database in a more readable way. Forms can display data and make entering date easier. Create a form for entering data into your survey database.

Activity 2: Database Queries >

What can you learn from the survey data you collected? Queries retrieve information from a database by finding records that match specified criteria. Decide what you want to know and what information you need to retrieve. Create queries to retrieve survey data that inform your decision.

Activity 3: Decision Possibilities >

Are you ready to evaluate alternative choices? Data analysis involves selecting and using appropriate formulas and functions. You can export your queries and import the data into a spreadsheet application. Analyze your survey data and evaluate alternative choices.

Activity 4: Data Visualization >

How many different kinds of charts have you seen? A chart is a visual representation of the meaning of a set of data. Different kinds of charts visualize different kinds of relationships among different kinds of data. Learn how to read and interpret different kinds of charts.

Activity 5: Decision Choice >

Are you ready to make a choice? You can create charts to help you visualize relationships among your survey data. Use your critical thinking skills to determine the kinds of charts that can help you evaluate decision alternatives. Create charts that help you visualize your evaluation and choice.
