How the Help Guide Can Enhance ELL Students' Learning
An ELL version of the Help Guide can help students improve their technology skills while they work on projects to master content standards. Benefits of using the Help Guide with English Language Learners include:
Peer Interaction and Recognition: As ELL students develop expertise in specific technology skills, either by assignment or by interest, they can share their knowledge and practice their conversation skills by helping peers learn new skills. This expertise gives ELL students status among their peers for their specialized knowledge and promotes integration into the classroom culture.
Vocabulary Development: Students see English in authentic contexts along with their native language in a side-by-side format, in which:
- Technology terms, such as format, spreadsheet, and operating system are viewed in English in the application screenshots and in the native language in the instructions.
- Students learn terms important for following directions, such as first, make sure, then, pick, and notice.
Differentiated Instruction: Students gain opportunities to work independently on the skills they need for particular tasks or projects:
- All English language learners, regardless of their native language, can see specific skills modeled and investigate other skills according to their needs and interests.
- Students who have had limited access to technology and may lack basic skills can practice these skills on their own without teacher instruction.
