Intel® Xeon® processor 7500 series helps University of Groningen maintain its status of leading European research centre
The University of Groningen and Intel have a long-standing relationship. The University regularly evaluates Intel’s latest technology to ensure its leading research facilities deliver the best possible performance. Most recently it rolled out the Intel® Xeon® processor 7500 series to further improve the efficiency of both its high-performance computing (HPC) platform and its virtual desktop infrastructure, enabling academics to access advanced modeling and analytics software from anywhere in the world.
Challenges
• Data-intensive computing.
Increase the efficiency of its HPC platform to further research carried out by the Astronomy department
• Virtual desktop infrastructure.
Extend the range of applications that can run on its virtual desktop infrastructure to include computer-aided design tools and advanced graphical simulation software

Intel® Xeon® processor 7500 series improves performance of bespoke algorithms running on its HPC by 50 percent, compared to previous-generation Intel® Xeon® processors 7400 series
• Improved virtualization.
One virtualized server based on Intel Xeon processor 7500 series supports 100 desktops (heavy-utilized workstations or high-performance desktops) running compute-heavy applications – Intel Xeon processor 7400 series required four virtualized servers support 100 desktops, running much simpler application
