Anastasia Kahindi, who grew up in a remote part of Kenya, was orphaned at a young age. She left school at 12, before developing career skills. She lived with her grandmother, and the two sustained themselves through sales from a small kiosk and limited support from an uncle. At 19, Anastasia enrolled in the Intel® Easy Steps program, which gives adult learners the opportunity to improve their social and economic self-sufficiency by acquiring digital literacy. The program introduced her to the Internet, PCs, and productivity applications. Soon after completing the course, Anastasia was able to land a job as an office assistant in the Marafa Community Development Programme. The organization builds local capacity by promoting development, expanding awareness of HIV and AIDS, and supporting education—especially for girls and orphans. In addition to performing office tasks using her newfound computer skills, Anastasia helps develop programs and works with youth to encourage them to acquire digital literacy skills.
