Leading Dutch hosting provider rolls out hosted desktop service based on Intel® Xeon® processor E5560

To meet the growing demand for hosted desktop services at a competitive price, IS Enterprise recently expanded its IS HyperGrid* cloud infrastructure platform with an Intel® Cloud Builders reference architecture and powered by the Intel® Xeon® processor E5560. By creating virtual containers on the end-user’s computer, the IS Enterprise hosted desktop service enables customers to maintain security while also benefitting from the scalability, flexibility, and predictable costs associated with a cloud service. It is now evaluating the additional benefits of upgrading to the Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series. Challenges • Hosted desktop trend. IS Enterprise needed to meet an increasing demand for desktop services hosted from the data center • Sharing the cloud. Rather than building a dedicated cloud for each customer, wanted to expand its existing cloud infrastructure platform to offer hosted desktop services for multiple customers Solutions • Best-in-class infrastructure. Expanded existing cloud infrastructure comprising 10 Cisco Unified Computing Systems*, each containing two Intel Xeon processors E5560 • Future upgrade. Now investigating further benefit of upgrading its IS HyperGrid cloud infrastructure platform to the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series • Separating the desktop. Virtual containers created on the client to separate work and personal software and applications Impact • Cloud benefits. IS Enterprise customers able to maintain security while also benefiting from the scalability, flexibility, and fixed costs of a cloud service • Greater revenue. IS Enterprise able to offer its hosted desktop service for a more competitive price, making it more attractive to smaller enterprises and opening up a new revenue stream Why the cloud? IS Enterprise offers a complete portfolio of Internet, networking, and hosting services to Dutch enterprises with 50 or more employees. It also offers customized services, such as hosted desktop, to larger enterprises. In these instances, IS Enterprise traditionally built a dedicated cloud infrastructure to support each individual customer’s hosted desktop environment. However, to meet growing demand for desktop services hosted from the data center, and also to make its hosted desktop services more attractive for smaller enterprises, IS Enterprise decided to expand its existing cloud infrastructure, called IS HyperGrid, to support multiple customers with hosted desktop services. By doing this, IS Enterprise would be able to pass on the benefits of economies of scale to smaller customers, making its hosted desktop services more attractive to them. To support the continuously growing cloud infrastructure, IS Enterprise turned to Intel. “There was never any doubt that we would roll out Intel hardware to support our cloud infrastructure,” explains Mike Janssen, technical director at IS Enterprise. “By comparing the specifications of the Intel hardware against competitors’ offerings, it was obvious the Intel Xeon processor E5560 delivered superior performance for the cloud,” he added.
