CSR: Doing the right things the right way
AIM launches a book on CSR@Intel

Singapore, November 21, 2008. Intel's wide array of corporate responsibility programs is the subject of a new case book by the Ramon V del Rosario Center for Corporate Social Responsibility Asian Institute of Management. Entitled "Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia: Getting It Done The Intel Way," the case book features 15 case studies on the implementation of Intel CSR programs in education, community work, the environment, and supplier ethics in India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.

According to Dr Anjan Ghosh, Intel Director of Corporate Affairs for Asia Pacific, "Corporate responsibility is an essential ingredient of how we do business: with uncompromising integrity and respect for the world around us. We are honored that an institution of the stature of the Asian Institute of Management has researched our programs and decided to publish its findings in the form of this book."

Ghosh adds, "It is a pleasure to share our work and we hope our key learnings can carry forward so that others may benefit. Doing things the right way is never easy, but it is a must for any business to thrive and be sustainable."

Based on in-depth interviews with internal and external stakeholders of Intel's CSR programs, the case studies featured in the book demonstrate the concrete benefits of implementing sustainable and well-focused CSR programs, both for society and for companies. The select case studies also show the value of leveraging on the competencies of the company's internal and external stakeholders, including employees, governments, civil society organizations, residents of host communities, and other companies, in effectively addressing key social issues that affect the long-term stability and competitiveness of Asian societies and the firms operating in them.

"Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia: Getting It Done The Intel Way," contributes to the body of knowledge and presents creative documentation of innovative and best CSR practices in Asia.

Christmas Comes Early As Intel Involved Volunteers Bring Hope And Joy To 1700 General Trias Kids

General Trias, December 17, 2008. Intel Philippines' Intel Involved volunteers lived the true spirit of Christmas as they recently distributed gifts and Noche Buena gift packs to 1700 children in General Trias. "Pick A Name, Bless A Child," Intel's annual Christmas outreach project, was jointly implemented with the Office of the Mayor of General Trias, Cavite on December 12, 2008. Intel's Arlita Narag, Corporate Affairs Manager, and General Trias Mayor JonJon Ferrer, led the gift giving at the General Trias Convention Center.

It was day of cheer and fun, mixed with some tears. It was joyful for the benefactors and beneficiaries, festive for the performers and all stakeholders, stressful yet fulfilling for the event organizers, historically memorable for Mayor Jon Jon Ferrer and his constituents for the day coincided with his birthday. Most of all, the day was emotionally meaningful for the indigent children, who were so grateful for what they received.

Intel Involved, the prime movers of the project, are employee-volunteers of Intel. Volunteerism is among the pillars of Intel's commitment to corporate responsibility. Intel at the Asian Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility
Microchip company presents the 2nd IACRA Award

Manila, Philippines. November 18, 2008. Intel highlights its commitment to corporate responsibility at the forthcoming Asian Forum on Corporate Responsibility 2008 (November 20–21, 2008, Grand Copthorne Hotel, Singapore).

"Corporate responsibility at Intel reflects our deep respect for people and for the world around us. It is integrated into how we do business — from providing a progressive workplace for our employees to setting ethical expectations for our suppliers to delivering more energy efficient products," says Dr Anjan Ghosh, Regional Director, Corporate Affairs, Asia Pacific, Intel.

Intel also co-presents the second Intel–AIM Corporate Responsibility Award (IACRA), as part of the Forum's highlights. Intel and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Ramon V. del Rosario Center for Corporate Responsibility launched the IACRA in 2007 to honor specific organizations for excellent CSR projects in one or more of the following areas: Education, especially improving access to and quality of basic education; Community Involvement, focusing on providing sustainable executive time and attention; Environmental Stewardship; and Poverty Alleviation through providing innovative use of information communications and technology (ICT).

Intel's active participation at the Asian Forum, Asia's premiere gathering of CSR players, is part of its conscious effort to spread the notion of CSR as the right way of doing business. In 2007, Intel signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Institutional Cooperation with AIM and the AIM Scientific Research Foundation to collaborate on various endeavors to further mainstream the practice of corporate social responsibility in business. The MOU institutionalized several joint activities designed to push corporate responsibility to the fore. According to Ghosh, "Working with AIM opens opportunities to further our mutual efforts in corporate social responsibility. We hope that together we can foster momentum amongst academia and industry for greater awareness and action in a sustainable way that helps transform people's lives."

Intel's approach to corporate responsibility is motivated by the understanding that the success of the company cannot be separated from the health of the planet and of economies around the world. Critical to Intel's approach is the fact that although significant investments are made, the company does more than make financial contributions — Intel gets directly involved with sustained programs and advocacy to drive change at a community, national and global level.

The first IACRA winner was Ballarpur Industries (BILT) of India. The company was cited for wide array of CSR programs, both internal to the organization, and externally, to the community and the world at large. Ballarpur's CSR programs center on employee volunteerism, health education, support to fair trade, and community development. Bilt's CSR are carried out at the following levels: communities, including integrated rural and urban community development ; workplace, especially HIV/AIDS prevention with employees, truckers and transporters; and support to national issues, specifically support to NGOs for Universalizing Primary Education and arresting school dropouts. Ms. Yashashree Gurjar, Chief General Manager & Head of CSR, who received the award last year, said, "We are proud to be cited by two institutions who are both staunch supporters and practitioners of CSR."

Aside from the lasting distinction as the first recipient of IACRA, BILT also received a USD20,000 grant from the Intel Foundation. "The grant was an incentive for the winning company to pursue and sustain its CSR efforts," explained Ghosh.

Intel's William Swope, Vice President and General Manager for Corporate Affairs, is also among the Keynote Speakers when the Forum opens on Nov 20. Three communities of learning receive fund grants from Intel
Tech savvy teachers lauded at the 3rd Intel® Teach Awards for 21st Century Educators

Mandaluyong City, November 12, 2008. Select local government units, learning institutions and individual educators are lauded today at the 3rd Intel® Teach Awards for 21st Century Educators, organized by Intel Philippines, in partnership with the Department of Education, the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED) and the University of the Philippines' National Institute of Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP-NISMED).

Surigao City, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology/Iligan City Division, and the province of Laguna received fund grants from Intel today, as they are cited as Intel Teach Community of Learning Champion Awardees. Lauded for fostering an enabling environment for ICT integration in education, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology/Iligan City Division is set to receive a P120,000 fund grant; Surigao City, plus the province of Laguna will be getting P100,000 each.

"We laud Intel for its innovative ways of bringing the benefits of 21st century learning to our public school system," said Education Secretary Jesli Lapus. "Your continuing support will certainly encourage our teachers, learners and community stakeholders to seriously consider ICT as a powerful tool in education," he added.

Plaques of Appreciation are also presented to the municipalities of Marikina, Cavite, Naga, Baao, Camarines Norte, Mandaue, Makati, Calbayog and Muntinlupa for spearheading the Intel Teach Program as a model for ICT integration into their respective education systems.

Finally, 16 Master Trainers (MTs) are also given Certificates of Appreciation for conducting trainings to volunteer units in 2008.

Intel Teach is Intel's professional development program designed to help teachers effectively integrate technology with learning. In the Philippines, Intel Teach has trained 91,616 teachers since the program was launched in 2001. This year, Intel Teach branches out to private schools with the successful piloting of the program in Notre Dame of Greater Manila (NDGM), a private, sectarian, Catholic school. In January 2006, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett announced plans to expand Intel Teach to an additional 10 million teachers from all over the world by 2011.

In the Philippines, Intel Teach is enhanced by the Community of Learning (CoL), a cluster of institutions and organizations in a geographic area all working together to harness technology in fostering quality education. CoL's network includes teachers, trainers, support providers, students, education policymakers, planners, administrators, technical support staff, education researchers, parents, local governments, and other education stakeholders that share information, expertise, and resources in support of technology integration in schools. As in all communities, CoLs are defined by a shared purpose, that is, technology integration, and a sense of belonging — membership and accountability. Since its pilot in 2005, nine (9) active CoLs have been thriving in various parts of the country. In these communities, program-based support and extensive interaction among stakeholders are fully utilized to achieve ICT integration goals. These CoLs are in Agusan del Sur, Bulacan, Calbayog City, Iligan City, Laguna, Makati City, Muntinlupa City, Surigao City and Cavite Province.

Intel Teach is one of the cornerstones of Intel's corporate responsibility programs. Intel's commitment to education stems from its desire to fuel tomorrow's innovation.

Shakarganj Mills Ltd. is 2008 Intel - AIM Corporate Responsibility Awardee Pakistan's sugar brand focuses health, education and community service for CSR

Singapore, November 21, 2008. Shakarganj Mills Ltd., a leading manufacturer of sugar and sugar by products in Pakistan, is this year's Intel-AIM Corporate Responsibility Awardee at the Asian Forum on CSR.

The Intel-AIM Corporate Responsibility Award (IACRA) is jointly given by Intel and the Asian Institute of Management Ramon V. del Rosario Center for Corporate Responsibility to honor specific companies that have exceptional CSR programs. According to Dr Anjan Ghosh, Intel's Corporate Affairs Director for Asia Pacific, "At Intel, we are committed to conducting our business with uncompromising integrity. And we know that many companies, big or small, all over Asia, are also committed to this same principle. Both Intel and AIM believe that we have to encourage companies to keep up with their commitments to CSR. The IACRA is our way of paying tribute to these companies."

Prof. Felipe Alfonso, Executive Director of the RVR Center for Corporate Social Responsibility, emphasizes, "Doing good in business does matter, and we want to encourage as many companies as possible to see the value in being committed corporate citizens, thus we tied-up with Intel on the IACRA."

Shakarganj Mills Ltd is lauded for its 'sukh Char Programs, a range of social action initiatives that aim to directly contribute towards safe, healthy and educated communities. Sukh Char programs cover education, healthcare, arts and cultural heritage.

Through the years, Shakarganj has been recognized as a leading corporate citizen in Pakistan. Apart from its tradition of philanthropy, Shakarganj has encouraged local partnerships that bring basic amenities to the company's neighboring communities. The company has an equally strong tradition of calibrating its processes to minimize waste or channel it into productive use, such as in the re-use of cane pulp in making particle-board, treating effluent water to make it fit for agricultural use, and using ethanol produced from molasses to produce electric power.

Shakarganj, a diversified business group producing a range of sugar products, ethanol and ethanol-based fuel, industrial building material, cotton textiles and yarn since 1967, is backed by a strong in-house research capacity and agricultural extension services across several districts in western Punjab. It has, over the past months, expanded its product portfolio to include processed foods that include dairy and fruit products, and commissioned Pakistan's first ethanol-powered "cleantech" energy plant that contributes eight megawatts to the national grid. Shakarganj's 2000 employees generated revenues approaching 6.4 billion rupees in 2007.

Intel and AIM launched the IACRA in 2007 to honor specific organizations for excellent CSR projects in one or more of the following areas: education, especially improving access to and quality of basic education; community involvement, focusing on providing sustainable executive time and attention; environmental stewardship; and poverty alleviation through providing innovative use of information communications and technology (ICT). The IACRA winner is selected by an inclusive nomination process, jointly conducted by Intel and AIM. Foremost consideration is a company's cohesive and comprehensive integration of CSR in one or more of the priority areas mentioned.

Gary Niekerk, Intel's Corporate Responsibility Manager, and one of the judges this year, says, "It was really tough choosing just one company. The number and quality of entries indicate that CSR is truly alive and thriving in Asia." Aside from Niekerk, the other members of the Panel Judges are: Ms. Claire Chiang, President, Singapore Compact for CSR; President, Banyan Tree Holdings Ltd.; Ms. Doris Becker, Chief Technical Advisor, GTZ-MPI Small and Medium, Enterprise Development Program (Vietnam); Ms. Ambreen Wahid, Executive Director, Responsible Business Initiative (Pakistan); Professor Maya Herrera, FASP, Asian Institute of Management (Philippines).

Twenty five organizations/companies from different parts of Asia were nominated for the IACRA this year. According to Ghosh, "We launched IACRA with the Asian Institute of Management as a way of enhancing our support to the practice of corporate responsibility. We support CSR's growth and development as in integral part of doing business and honoring organizations that practice such is a good way to ensure that CSR is propagated for the long term." Winning the IACRA is also a boost to an organization or company's credibility as a CSR practitioner, as it is strictly a peer-nomination, non-competitive award.

Ghosh adds, "Because there is a collective move to veer away from the usual dole-outs as a form of CSR, winning the IACRA is validation of the sustainability and impact of one's CSRA programs. Another important benefit of winning the IACRA is that the Intel Foundation provides a fund grant to this winning organization to fund a chosen CSR program."
