Tagaytay, Cavite City. February 16, 2008 – Nationwide scientific research competition Intel Philippine Science Fair successfully came to a close today with eight of the best projects from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao grabbing the top spot for the Life Science and Physical Science categories.

The first prize winners for Life Science are:

  • Cluster 1 – Individual – Jessel Fatima Cane
    Bayugan Comp. National High School (R–13) Semi-conducting property NaCl doped green mussel (Perna viridis) shells: an innovation for organic semi-conductor systems.
  • Cluster 1 – Team – Marc Amando Marquez, Anna Rose Malapad & Rachel Aurora Chi
    Marinduque National High School Marinduque (R–4B) The effectiveness of (Jathropa curcas) sap as metallic ion indicator in water through color reaction.
  • Cluster 2 – Individual – Andrew Diamante
    Visayas State University Laboratory HS (R-8) Prediction of total soluble solids in ripe mangoes based on its electrical resistance.
  • Cluster 2 – Team – Erwin Angelo Amago, John Isaac Merin & Lawreanne Sanico
    Phil. Science High School Eastern Visayas Campus (R–8) Mathematical representation of resistance trends of exhibited by E. Coli and Kiebsiella against amoxicillin with clavulanic acid through different generation.

The first prize winners for Physical Science are:

  • Cluster 1 – Individual – Steven Tan
    The Quantum Academy Inc. General Santos City (R–12) Pharmaceutical compounds (antibacterial immunobooster) from Barringtonia Asiatica and Garcinia Mangostana.
  • Cluster 1 – Team – John Vincent Gabiano & Mae Ann Tabasin
    Maasin National Comprehensive HS Maasin, Iloilo (R–6) Effects of levamisole in the non-specific cellular immune response in Tilapia.
  • Cluster 2 – Individual – Louie Lugto
    Don Alejandro Roces Sr. Science & Tech HS, Quezon City (NCR) Isolation and characterization of the most cytotoxic fraction of selected Philippine poisonous crabs.
  • Cluster 2 – Team – Marvin Paolo Ambrosio, Rachel Ruth Cahilig & Adrian Patacsil
    Philippine Science High School Quezon City (NCR) Construction of a mechanical prototype of a micro tremor recorder.

Ten exceptional students have also been chosen to represent the Philippines at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), which this year will be held in Atlanta Georgia on May 11–14.

The Intel ISEF representatives are:

  • Jed Sidney Oliva – Ballesteros National High School Cagayan (R–2) MORH: Jedoque Process of increasing the compressive strength and lessening the water absorbency of hollow blocks.
  • Andrew Diamante – Visayas State University Laboratory High School (R–8) Prediction of total soluble solids in ripe mangoes based on its electrical resistance.
  • Steven Tan –The Quantum Academy Inc. General Santos City (R–12) Pharmaceutical compounds (antibacterial immunobooster) from Barringtonia Asiatica and Garcinia Mangostana.
  • Louie Lugto – Don Alejandro Roces Sr. Science & Technology High School Quezon City (NCR) Isolation and characterization of the most cytotoxic fraction of selected Philippine poisonous crabs.

In all, 46 students composed the 24 individual and team winning entries at the IPSF this year. “The inventive research studies showcased in the fair certainly proved the truth of this year’s theme – that Excellence in Science and Technology starts with me,” says Jay Tulao, Education Manager of Intel.

“Looking at these different projects really showed us the promise the Filipino youth have in math and science. Just give them the proper support and you will realize our students have creativity and ingenuity at par with first–world countries,” he says.

Arlita Narag, Intel Corporate Affairs Manager, echoes that sentiment, saying that “Just as Intel is continually innovating and evolving, through young geniuses like the IPSF participants, the Intel Philippine Science Fair continues to be a venue that keeps alive the spirit of unlimited possibilities and the excitement of the next scientific discovery.”

The Intel Philippine Science Fair is an annual science competition that provides a venue for budding young Filipino scientists to demonstrate their talent and be recognized by their peers and the community. Now on its 11th year, the IPSF continues to fulfill its commitment of advancing math and science research and nurturing the potential of budding young Filipino scientists – this year, 3,500 research project entries were considered nationwide, with 113 projects making the cut to the finals and vying for the top prizes.

Intel gets 2007 Don Emilio Abello Energy Efficiency Citation Award

The Department of Energy awarded Intel Technology Philippines a Citation Award 2007 at the recently concluded Don Emilio Abello Energy Efficiency Awards. The citation was given to Intel for its laudable energy efficiency and conservation performance.

In 2007, Intel’s energy conservation projects, such as the CS energy efficiency program and manufacturing tool bagging efforts allowed the microchip giant to conserve 15 million kilo watt hours, equivalent to USD1.85M in savings.

According to DOE, Intel’s commitment to energy conservation shows both economic and financial benefits of investing in energy efficiency. More importantly, these efforts contributed to the overall abatement of greenhouse gas emissions. DOE also cited Intel’s contribution to the government’s call for prudence in the use of energy.

Intel’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint manifests its commitment to corporate responsibility.
