A special call for science: Delegates of 10th Intel Philippine Science Fair visit Intel site in Cavite.
Cavite, Philippines, February 15, 2007 – On a day traditionally celebrated with red roses and sweet kisses, a group of high school students from all over the country professed their love for science.

In celebration of this year's theme "Power @ 10," the national finalists of the 10th Intel Philippine Science Fair gathered yesterday at Intel Philippines' assembly and test site in General Trias to participate in a series of interactive presentations by Intel engineers.

What's it like working at Intel? Students find out…Meant to empower the 110 budding scientists from the country's secondary schools to continue to pursue and explore the different sciences, the Valentine's Day onsite activity also featured the participation of the student advisers, the Department of Education regional coordinators, and a selection of staff from Education Department and the Bureau of Secondary Education.

Intel Philippines employees, meanwhile, led breakout sessions on special science and engineering topics, and offered a sneak peek at engineering life in Intel.

"You really are on the right track," said Intel engineer Josh Cruz as he spoke to the visiting finalists. "I will encourage you all, as I will my own son, to stay in this track of science and technology. The demand today is so huge for talents like you."

The event was part of Intel's effort to encourage the students to pursue technical degrees and help move technology into today's knowledge economy.

"This was a very good experience. It's not often that high school students like us are exposed to such informative talks about the industry," said Intel Philippine Science Fair finalist Vivien Ang from the University of Immaculate Conception in Davao. "I agree with the speakers that information technology should really be explored in our education."

The high school students will take part in the competition today at the Tagaytay International Convention Center, culminating tomorrow, February 16, with formal awarding ceremonies. Several awards and prizes are at stake, but most coveted is the chance to represent the Philippines at the Intel International Science Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in Albuquerque, New Mexico on May 13-19.

Organized by the Department of Education, the annual fair has a rigorous selection process which starts from the division level, progressing through the regional, then national level. This year's theme, "Power @ Ten," marks a celebration of the significant milestones the Intel Philippine Science Fair has made during the past decade.

Effectively the premier venue for budding Filipino scientists to shine and be recognized, the 10th edition of the fair also reflects the effective collaboration between Intel, the private sector, and the government for the common cause of uplifting the quality of science education and research in the high school level.

Power @ 10: Empowering A Decade of Science Research Excellence – High school scientists vie for top honors at 10th Intel Philippine Science Fair.
Tagaytay, Philippines, February 15, 2007 – The National Finals of the Intel Philippine Science Fair kicks off today with the theme "Power @ 10," a fitting reflection of the competition's impact and achievements in the past decade.

A total of 110 Filipino high school students will take part in the fair happening at the Tagaytay International Convention Center, culminating tomorrow, Feb 16, with the formal awarding ceremonies. Several awards and prizes are at stake, but the most coveted is the chance to represent the Philippines at the Intel International Science Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in Albuquerque, New Mexico this May 13–19.

The "Power @ Ten" theme celebrates the significant milestones of the Intel Philippine Science Fair during the past decade.

Effectively the premier venue for budding Filipino scientists to shine and be recognized, the 10th edition of the fair also reflects the effective collaboration between Intel, the private sector, and the government for the common cause of uplifting the quality of science education and research in the high school level.

"We have recorded an increased participation rate of 20 percent each year," says Yvonne Garcia-Flores, Education Manager, Intel Philippines. "This reflects that our commitment to advancing math, science, and engineering education and research is paying off."

Throughout the years, the Intel Philippine Science Fair has shown that Filipino students—despite limited resources and other challenges—continue to pursue excellence with persistence, inquisitiveness, and risk-taking. Recognizing the need to develop local pipelines for these talents, Intel supports programs aimed at encouraging the students' long-term interest in math, science and engineering.

The Intel Philippine Science Fair exemplifies this support, as it helps move technology into today's knowledge-driven economy and keep up with the demands of the modern world. Over the years, a number of the fair's winners have been sent to represent the Philippines in the annual Intel ISEF, the world's most prestigious and largest science competition for high school students.

Showcasing the Filipino's creativity, analytical mind and ingenuity with a wide range of projects, the past delegates have ably competed against other countries and garnered an impressive list of awards and honours in the Intel ISEF. True enough, the Filipino student is at par with the best of the world…especially, as in the case of the Intel Philippine Science Fair, when they are given the support and venue to shine.

"At Intel, corporate responsibility means operating with transparency, strengthening our communities, and improving lives through technology," says Arlita Narag, Corporate Affairs Manager, Intel Philippines. "It's Intel's responsibility and a critical component of our global business success."

The annual report provides information about Intel's economic, environmental, and social performance to employees, shareholders, customers, suppliers, government officials and the communities in which Intel operates. Globally, Intel Corporation also releases its annual Corporate Responsibility Report around second quarter of each year. "For the first time, Intel Phils is coming out with our very own corporate responsibility report, mainly because we want to live by our mantra of transparency," explains Narag.

"Intel is driven to make a difference in the areas of environment, education and community," says Narag. "We look for concrete ways to lead others to new and better ways to live and work."

Environmental excellence is an integral hallmark of Intel's leading-edge assembly and test facilities. Intel Philippines has made significant progress in reducing its environmental footprint, both in operations and products. Explains Narag, "We design products with the environment in mind—all throughout the product life cycle. In 2006, we brought new energy-efficient technologies to market. We are also helping drive environmentally responsible end-of-life solutions for electronics."

Meanwhile, education is the cornerstone of Intel's corporate responsibility efforts, not just in the Philippines, but all over the world. "We believe education is critical to inspire creativity and innovation. We work with the government through DepEd and DOST, as well as with non-government institutions like FIT-ED and UP-NISMED to bring technology closer to the students, paving the way for greater achievements in science, research, engineering and similar fields," says Narag. (FIT-ED is the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development while UP-NISMED stands for University of the Philippines' National Institute of Science and Mathematics Education Development.)

Intel Philippines also boasts of a high rate of employee volunteer. In 2006, the Municipality of General Trias became a "Bayan ng mga Volunteer," benchmarking on how Intel's Intel Involved in the Community has helped in community building. In 2006 alone, 4,964 Intel Philippines employees committed their time and shared their talents, in a wide array of volunteer activities.

Aside from driving a wide array of corporate responsibility initiatives, Intel Philippines is also a major contributor to the national coffers. In 2006, its export sales totaled PHP 4,831,055,110.25, inclusive of the value of consigned raw materials.
