Initiative: An update on Intel’s CSR efforts in the Philippines

Initiatives to make life better

Presenting our newly re-named e-newsletter, Initiative. While it’s name is new, the essence of our favorite quarterly remains – that of inspiring each of us to make a difference in our community. We still have loads and loads of great stories about how we are slowly, but surely, changing the world for the better. We decided to change our e-publication’s name in keeping with the e-newsletter from our CSR movers and shakers in Asia, also named Initiative.

Our second quarter went by with a flurry of volunteer activities under our Brigada Eskwela program in the public schools in General Trias. While we spent most of the summer months getting the classrooms ready, we opened the third quarter with a distribution of school supplies to the 30,000 public school students of General Trias. As has been the tradition these past years, Mayor JonJon Ferrer relied on our able-bodied Intel Involved volunteers to distribute the school supplies to the school children in his municipality, under his very own Balik Eskwela project.

On July 18, we celebrated Intel’s 40th anniversary. We give credence to our tradition of making lives better by collectively logging one million hours of volunteer work. What’s more, our young ones at the Intel Computer Clubhouses (the General Trias Computer Clubhouse in General Trias and the Mater Dolorosa Clubhouse in Makati) participated in the World Digital Mural Project, another great celebration of our 40th year.

So, cheers, to the next 40 years of changing the world!

Arlita Narag
Corporate Affairs Manager

What’s in store for the third quarter?

Gear up for the 10th year anniversary of Intel Involved’s Blood Drive. Start eating healthy and keeping early hours so you’ll be fit for the blood donation… we will also be welcoming have Red Cross VIPs in the site!

Another event to watch out for is the ground breaking of the Intel Involved Matching Grant Program (IIMGP) year 4 General Tias-Intel Multipurpose Complex – another noteworthy landmark for the tireless toils of our Intel Involved volunteers!

Site’s volunteer numbers, as of latest count

True to our reputation as the site with the highest volunteer participation rate, Intel Philippines once again leads in the global effort to log in one million volunteer hours (in celebration of our 40th anniversary, of course!). As of June 16, we have already recorded 122,000 volunteer hours! Less than 30,000 hours more to go and we meet our site goal of 150,000 hours for 2008 (ooops, there’s a stretch GOAL!)

A total of 1,900 Intel employees from Information Technology, Security, Corporate Services, CVAT Teams 1-4, CPLG, Finance, CVAT Staff, CVAT MI/MSE, Quality and Reliability, Platform Components Group, Philippines site staff, and Corporate Affairs have already volunteered.

PCG BRIGADA ESKWELA

On June 11, 2008, the Platform Components Group Product Development Engineers (PDE) and Quality & Reliability Engineers (QRE) teams made another milestone in the history of PCG in the Philippines: 50 employees of PCG, including the Vice President of Digital Enterprise Group and General Manager of PCG, Tom Macdonald, led the volunteerism activity in General Artemio Ricarte Elementary School in General Trias, Cavite. Brian Walker and Glenn Robertson, PCG Business Operations Manager and Tylersburg Manufacturing Program Manager, respectively, also joined.

General Artemio Ricarte Elementary School is a small town school in General Trias, just beside the City Municipal Hall where almost 1300 pupils all over the vicinity are enrolled. The school still lacks rooms to accommodate the large number of pupils going there. Rooms are fully packed with students and the additional room would certainly help them cope up with the lack of space.

The team’s mission on that day was to “fix” the Kindergarten room. And “fix” it they did, as the almost abandoned Kindergarten Room was dramatically converted to a room conducive for learning! During the day-long activity, the volunteers repainted the walls, cabinets, tables, ceiling and restored the lightings and electrical fixtures in the classroom. Brian, Glenn and Tom also conducted English and Math lessons to Grade 3 and Grade 4 pupils.

Here are some snippets of how the volunteers felt during that day…

“It was a great opportunity to give back to the community in Cavite. I'm personally proud of our team for making a difference in the lives of our young people,” Tom Macdonald.

"It was a great experience to be able to help refresh the old class room by wall/cupboard/floor painting and rewiring the electricity," Ween Keen Wong, Tylersburg Early Involvement PE from PG7.

“When I first arrived at the school where we were volunteering at, I was introduced to the principal of the school in the computer lab area which was our ‘home base’ for the volunteer effort. She introduced herself as Mrs. Del Mundo. Later in the day after I taught a class about the math principles on the power of 10; then, she showed me her office and proudly showed me all the awards, plaques and trophies that Intel has given the school. I could tell she was touched by the generosity of the Intel people. To show her appreciation to me, she gave me a small porcelain figurine smiling rat that was sitting on Chinese money. I am keeping it on my desk at work as a memory of that day,” Glen Robertson

"It always feels good to be helping out in the community where people need assistance - especially in schools. It was great to see the whole team pitching in to fix up the school and it was a lot of fun teaching the students,” Brian Walker.

The teachers, led by their principal, Mrs. Del Mundo expressed their appreciation through a heartwarming letter, a part of which read, "Who would think that Yuppies (young professionals) from INTEL would do the job? But in their faces we could see the joy and pride. There were also foreign employees who taught some lessons to selected classes that gave more excitement to the students; these experiences they will always remember for it is unusual for them to have foreign teachers … I am not only thankful for the material things they bought, but for the gestures and the services they rendered, too, as their actions set an example to our students. Unconsciously, these students could only see and somehow they would eventually acquire the good deeds of the people from INTEL PHILIPPINES."

Once again, PCG has shown camaraderie and spirit of "bayanihan".

Technology has a heart: The CV IT Outreach activity

The site’s Information Technology (CV IT) group had a community outreach activity on May 23, 2008 at the Home of Joy Orphanage. Located in KM 36, Governor's Drive, Brgy. Sampaloc IV, Dasmarinas Cavite, the orphanage is home to abandoned children.

A total of 30 volunteers from the group joined the 38 orphans, including a number of infants. Some P25,000.00 worth of donations, including rice, milk formula, diapers, medicines and vitamins, canned goods, baby soap, shampoo, laundry soap, and assorted clothing were among the items given. The Jollibee mascot was also there, and several parlor games made the simple and short event successful for the organizers and memorable for the kids. Indeed, for a day, the Home of Joy Orphanage was transformed into a home full of joy! HOJ coordinator Unnie Dequilla thanked the group no end.

Traditionally, outreach is being held during Christmas season. For the CV IT group, they make sure that any season is a time of giving. On top of their very active Brigada Eskwela – the Intel Involved drive school adoption program - they were able to do this rare opportunity to help children in need, as well.

PGMA at the site

The visit of Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Cavite local government officials to Intel Philippines provided occasion for a good discussion and updates on our corporate responsibility and GPTW programs. Our employees and Intel ISEF student-winners were very delighted to meet the President!

15 million pesos raised for VMGP year 2 now improving lives of GenTri students and teachers alike

The second year of the implementation of the IIMGP generated a whopping P15.6 million (P15, 631,226.00 to be precise!) for the 30 public schools and the Intel-Ayala Computer Clubhouse (now named General Trias Computer Clubhouse) in 2006-2007. The recently submitted audit report of the External IIMGP Committee validated just how far the year two IIMGP funds went, in as far as improving the lot of the 30 public schools in General Trias, plus the General Trias Computer. In all, 17 classrooms, 5 computer laboratories, 1 media room, 2 clinics, 2 Science laboratories, 1 Math Research Center, 1 Home Economics Room, 3 ALS Learning Centers, 1 library and 1 stage were built from the IIMGP funds. More importantly, with the new classrooms, the ratio of students to classroom improved, from 90:1 to 40:1.

With computers and internet access acquired through the IIMGP funds, other improvements are now steadily being felt amongst students and faculty, alike: enhanced teacher productivity; more efficient administrative and other paperwork tasks necessary for teaching; development of a supported network that integrates student record keeping, attendance and other functions are integrated with related systems with supported network. And as one student has succinctly put it, after spending precious hours on the computer newly acquired by her school, “The internet is a symbol of freedom… The internet takes me to places, I’m able to explore the world and able to ‘visit’ other countries, learn from many cultures and languages...” The places abroad inspire me to dream… someday I will go there…”

Each year, the tedious task of monitoring the various IIMGP projects falls on the members of the External IIMGP Committee. Composed of well-respected members of the General Trias Community (from the government, academe, youth sector and the community at large), these dedicated people conducted surprise inspections, site validations and other similar activities, to ensure that the IIMGP beneficiaries were maximizing the grants that they have earned through the volunteer hours of Intel Involved.

For the second year of IIMGP, a total of 132,925.17 volunteer hours were rendered by some 4,764 Intel Involved volunteers. The attached document has a complete listing of the IIMGP schools and the corresponding amounts that were granted to them.

Pisay entry wins in Intel ISEF

A microtremor device made from scrap materials won the Distinguished Achievement Award at the recently concluded Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2008 (Intel ISEF) held in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Given by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the Distinguished Achievement Award is presented to projects that display excellence related to the geophysical sciences.

The winning team from the Philippine Science High School is composed of Adrian Patacsil, 17, Marvin Paolo Ambrosio 18, and Rachel Ruth Cahilig, 16.

A total of nine students represented the Philippines in Intel ISEF. They also included: Jed Sidney Oliva (Ballesteros National High School Cagayan); Andrew Diamante (Visayas State University Laboratory High School); Steven Tan (The Quantum Academy Inc.); and teammates Michelle Barbon, Rachel Bernados and Mary Cris Corpuz (Gingoog City Comprehensive National High School).

The Philippines’ participation to Intel ISEF was organized by the Department of Education, and sponsored by Intel Philippines. The country’s delegation to Intel ISEF comes from select winners of the Intel Philippine Science Fair (IPSF) held every February in the country. IPSF has a rigorous selection process, starting from the division to the regional, all the way to the national level, ensuring that only top notch projects make it to the final cut, ultimately winning the honor to represent the Philippines in Intel ISEF. Intel ISEF is the the world’s most prestigious pre-college science and research competition.

Over the years, the country’s successful participation in Intel ISEF has shown that Filipino students – despite limited resources and other challenges – continue to pursue excellence with persistence, inquisitiveness, and risk-taking. Recognizing the need to develop local pipelines for these talents, Intel supports programs aimed at encouraging the students' long-term interest in math, science and engineering; supporting the participation to Intel ISEF exemplifies this, as it helps move technology into today's knowledge-driven economy and keep up with the demands of the modern world.

This year, Intel ISEF brought together 1,512 young scientists from 51 countries, regions, and territories.
