Meet Eric Larson, Intel Science Talent Search Winner

Home-grown talent, Oregon style.

Honoring the next generation of American innovators, Intel Corporation sponsors America's oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition, the Intel Science Talent Search. This year’s top winner was Eric Larson, age 17, of South Eugene High School. Eric won the top award, a USD 100,000 scholarship from the Intel Foundation, for his research project classifying mathematical objects called fusion categories. Eric's work describes these in certain dimensions for the first time.

Eric joins a growing list of Oregon students who have won one of the top awards in the Intel Science Talent Search. Brian McCarthy of Liberty High School took the 3rd place spot last year winning a USD 50,000 scholarship from the Intel Foundation. And in 2007, Dmitry Vaintrob, also from South Eugene High School, won 3rd place also earning a USD 50,000 scholarship. Over the last 8 years, 5 Oregon students have received one of the top 3 awards at the Intel Science Talent Search, more than any other state in the U.S. We have some talented kids in Oregon!
