Putting a smile on the faces of kids in Kulim

Intel Malaysia helps 130 less privileged students look forward to the new school year
Kulim, December 6, 2006 – In a ceremony filled with fun and good cheer, Intel Malaysia for the tenth year in the row, hosted its Back To School drive to give school children from less privileged families in Kulim, a better start to the new school year. This year 130 children will receive school supplies and uniforms.

Intel Malaysia's Back To School drive is an annual tradition and to date 1,173 (including 2006) school children in the Kulim district have benefited from this initiative. Every year Intel Malaysia works with the Kulim Welfare Department to identify children whose families may not be able to afford new school supplies and uniforms.

The guest of honor at this year's ceremony was YB Mr. Boey Chin Gan, the Kedah State Assemblyman for the Kulim constituency who gave away the gifts to the kids accompanied by Ms. Shelly Esque, World Wide Public Affairs Director, Intel Corporation.

This year, Intel Malaysians participated actively in the program by sponsoring cash towards the purchase of the Back to School kit for each kid. Additionally, the generous Intel Malaysians got to meet the kids in person during the event at the Intel Malaysia – Kulim Design and Development Centre.

"I may have experienced this event a number of times around the world but it is truly priceless to see the joy in the faces of these children after they receive their gifts" said Ms. Esque, "This is demonstrative of the close co-operation between Intel and the local authorities to improve the quality of life for the people around us and this is why we are an asset to the communities we work and live in."

Intel Malaysia is fully committed to enhance the quality of life in the community in which we live and work. Over 34 years, various activities have been carried in our locations, Penang, Kulim and Cyberjaya to reach out to the community around us.

Introducing the business case for CSR in Penang

Intel Malaysia and PSDC host forum for companies
Penang, September 18, 2006 – In line with the nation's socio-economic objectives, corporate social responsibility activities have now become a critical component to the success of companies in Malaysia. Therefore, Intel Malaysia and Penang Skills Development Center (PSDC) have taken it upon themselves to organize and host the First Corporate Social Responsibility Forum in Penang.

It was officiated this morning by Yang Berhormat Dato' Dr Toh Kin Woon, Chairman, State Economic Planning, Education, Human Resource, Science, Technology and Innovations Committee. Speakers at this forum included Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah, Trustee, Yayasan Salam Malaysia; Mr Stephen Frost, Founder and Director of CSR Asia; and Mr. Gary Niekerk, Corporate Responsibility Operations Manager, Intel Corporation.

In his opening speech Yang Berhormat Dato' Dr Toh Kin Woon said, "This CSR forum is very timely and in line with our recent 2007 budget, to encourage the private sector to participate actively in corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes. Whilst philanthropic values are vital, companies should embrace CSR as part of their strategy towards ensuring the sustainability of their business. We believe in the business case for CSR here and we hope companies will see the benefits to their organization, their people and most importantly, the community in which they work and live in."

"Over the years Intel Malaysia has taken a more focused approach to CSR. We work hard to define what CSR means to Intel Malaysia and we meet with stakeholders regularly to clarify the key CSR issues for our organization, our employees and our community. At Intel, corporate responsibility means achieving business success in ways that honor our ethical values and demonstrate respect for people and mother nature," said KC Yoon, Managing Director, assembly and test, Intel Malaysia.

It is hoped that this forum will spark off the companies especially the MNCs in northern states to further propagate CSR in the state. It is also hoped that the Penang state government will set up a working committee comprising the private sector, public sector and the NGOs to advise the state government on how CSR activities can be promoted in the state.

Over 100 tonnes of solid waste collected
Kulim, September 13, 2006 – Over a three month period, Intel Malaysia employees, students of 58 participating schools in Penang & Kulim as well as the surrounding community managed to collect 110 tonnes of solid waste. This was achieved as part of the 2006 Intel Malaysia Recycling Campaign. Yesterday, the Intel Malaysia Recycling Campaign was brought to a close by YB Dato' Chong Itt Chew, Chairman, Kedah Industry, Transportation, Commerce, Consumer and Chinese Community Affairs Committee, with a prize presentation ceremony to winners of the various competitions held during the period.

One of the aspects of this campaign was a paper recycling competition between 58 schools in Penang and Kulim. The main objective of this campaign was to raise the environmental awareness amongst students of these schools whilst encouraging students to reduce, reuse and recycle. The paper recycling competition highlights include an environmental briefing conducted by Intel Involved volunteers. Over 220 Intel volunteers spent more than 750 hours sharing important environmental facts and recycling tips to students in schools within Penang and Kulim.

Additionally, Intel Malaysia employees rallied in their various buildings to collect recyclable waste. In total, RM 35,000 was raised from the sale of the solid waste and the proceeds will be channeled to the WWF-Malaysia.

"At Intel Malaysia, we feel a responsibility to the environment. We are pleased about the overwhelming success and support for the 2006 Intel Malaysia recycling campaign. It is heartening to see the commitment and enthusiasm for conserving the environment in not only Intel Malaysia employees but the students as well. Their efforts have resulted in the largest amount of solid waste every collected and recycled in the history of Intel Malaysia's recycling campaigns", said Mr. KC Yoon, Managing Director, Assembly and Test, Intel Malaysia.

Over a three month period, students at these 58 schools filled up the recycling bins located within their school compound. At the end of each week during the competition, representatives from Malaysia Newsprint Industries (MNI) collected and weighed the material in each school's bin to determine the winner of this competition.

The overall winners for the most amount of recyclable materials per capita category are as follows: SMK Convent Butterworth; The school will receive three laptops, for their efforts. Malaysian students develop bio-fuel alternative

Three secondary school students' winning idea secures them a seat to Intel® ISEF 2007
24 August 2006, Malaysia – The worries of rising petrol prices spurred three secondary school students to look for alternative fuel. Their research project on extracting bio-ethanol from banana came in first in the recent Ministry of Education's "Pertandingan Inovasi Sains dan Kejuruteraan Kebangsaan," which is an Intel ISEF affiliated fair in Malaysia.

"Our grant program supports our education initiative by promoting the use of the latest technology in education curriculum, furthering technology research and development and encouraging young men and women to enter technical fields," said KC Yoon, Managing Director, Assembly and Test, Intel Malaysia.

The winning entry, "Bio-ethanol from Banana as an Alternative Bio-Fuel," was the brainchild of students Mohammad Ashraaf Raiez Mohammad Ridzuan, 16, Aminuddin Abdul Raheem, 16, and Muhammad Na'im As-siddiq Wan Hasamudin, 17, from Sekolah Sains Sultan Hj Ahmad Shah Pekan, Pahang. They had toiled on the intricacies of this innovation for over 5 months. The win has also secured them a place in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world's largest pre-college science competition, which will be held in Alburquerque, New Mexico, United States in May 2007.

Apart from the team project, Kelvin Chiong Tak Lek, 17 of SMK Batu Lintang, Sarawak won the individual category with his project of turning waste into fertilizer. This is a sweet victory for Kelvin, who will follow in the footsteps of his sister Esther Chiong who had won a Third Place-Grand Award, Individual Category for Chemistry at Intel ISEF 2005.

The winners received their prizes from the Deputy Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Dato' Hon Choon Kim, who was present at the prize giving ceremony held at Sekolah Menengah Tuanku Ampuan Durah, Seremban.

"These competitions allow young Malaysians to pursue their interest in science, math and engineering while encouraging them to practice inquisitive thinking and problem solving skills. For the past years we have seen homegrown talents doing us proud in the International fair and we wish this year's team the very best in ISEF 2007" said KC Yoon, Managing Director, assembly and test, Intel Malaysia.

In May this year, a team from Sultan Mohamad Jiwa Science Secondary School, Sungei Petani, Kedah won a Fourth Place, Grand Award for Team Projects at the Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2006 held in Indianapolis Indiana, USA. That was the first time a Malaysian team project had won a Grand Award at Intel ISEF.
