Intel Malaysia is fully committed to enhance the quality of life in the community in which we live and work. Over 34 years, various activities have been carried in our various locations, Penang, Kulim and Cyberjaya to reach out to the community around us. There are two integral components, namely community care and capacity building in the community initiatives that are carried out by Intel Malaysia.
Our community care is evidenced through various activities such as an extensive employee volunteerism program also known as Intel Involved, VMGP, sponsorship/adoption program, cash and in-kind donations, and a host of volunteer activities in the focus areas of environment, education and community outreach.
Intel has expanded its Volunteer Matching Grant Program (VMGP) into Malaysia.
The VMGP program encourages Intel employees to volunteer in schools and rewards the schools with a donation based on the amount of time employees volunteer. Having our talented, smart employees work directly with children is a great way to communicate the importance of education and personalize why science, math and technology are important and cool. Once Intel employees have volunteered 20 hours at a single school, the school receives a cash donation of USD75. The donation amount is based on the total number of Intel employee volunteer hours accumulated beyond the 20 hour base during the academic year.
For VMGP, employees volunteer in many different ways. In addition to in classroom work, some schools offer opportunities for involvement on evenings and weekends. This will include events such as beautifying the school compound, painting classroom, class excursions, "gotong royong", science camps etc. Volunteers can also participate in technology advisory committees, local school committees, school site-based management councils. Intel Malaysians have contributed over 40,000 hours of their personal time to charitable programs, in the last 4 years on Intel Involved activities and VMGP. The VMGP was launched in 2006 by PSO during the official opening of KM3 in Kulim. In 2007, the first VMGP payment of USD21,975 was made to 15 participating schools.
In addition to these, Intel reaches out to the community we work and live in through talks on specific areas such as safety at home and outside the home, environmental awareness etc. In 2006, Intel Malaysia launched a two month recycling campaign and collected tons of solid waste from Intel Malaysia employees, students of participating schools (Penang & Kulim), and the surrounding community. A total of USD10K collected and matched by Intel Foundation from the sale of solid waste collected had been channeled to WWF-Malaysia. In 2007, a bigger scale of this program was officially launched by the Penang State Environmental Working Group(PEWOG) involving more schools in Penang and Kulim and member companies from KITA and Frepenca and with a goal of collecting 150 tons.
Within the capacity building program, we continue to develop the readiness in key areas of nation building, through community computer centers, e-biz classes to the government officials, etc.
As our country moves to become a knowledge-based economy, there have been observations that a large segment of the society has never used a computer. In response to this, Intel Malaysia is looking to bridge the digital divide and broaden access to technology by establishing community computer centers to encourage:
- Computer literacy in local communities
- Computer workshops
- Internet surfing
The community computer center serves to provide equal access and opportunity to everyone, irrespective of age, social standing and race, to develop the confidence, skills, resources and experiences needed to use technology meaningfully and play a role in the new economy. To-date, four Intel community computer centers have been established in Penang (three) and Kulim (one).
Now, Intel is expanding its Volunteer Matching Grant Program (VMGP) into Malaysia. The program has served Intel communities in the United States since 1995 and in 2003 was rolled out in the Philippines and Israel and now in Malaysia.
The VMGP program encourages Intel employees to volunteer in schools and rewards the schools with a donation based on the amount of time employees volunteer.
