Intel Ireland wins ICT Excellence Award

Intel ICT Excellence AwardIntel Ireland has won the prestigious honour of the ICT Excellence Award 2009 under the category of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) for the program Log on, Learn. The awards were presented at a Gala Presentation Dinner in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, on May 21st.

The ICT Excellence Awards programme, now in its ninth year, is Ireland's longest-running and most prestigious event, recognising outstanding achievers in the information and communications technology industry. The CSR category accolade is awarded to the company who demonstrated an outstanding recognition of the technology industry's responsibility to social and environmental best practice.

The winning program, Log On Learn, was initially an Intel idea and is now a collaborative program between Intel, Microsoft, and An Post. Log On, Learn is designed to 'buddy up' a participating transition-year student with an older person from their local community, to share skills with each other. Since its official launch in October '08, over 150 schools have taken part and over 3,000 older people have been trained in the use of computers. There are now over 200 schools signed up to run the program from Sept '09.

Evelyn Pender, Intel's Community Solutions Manager, was thrilled with the award on the night, "We are delighted to have won this award. Log On, Learn was the result of a unique collaboration between three companies—Intel, Microsoft, and An Post. We set out to address the digital divide but never expected the kind of response we are getting from teachers, students, and older people. There is such a great need for age appropriate, one-to-one training, which this initiative provides. Log on, Learn is going from strength to strength, with approximately 240 schools now signed up nationally, to run it from Sept '09."
