K–16 education

Intel values education through our financial, technical and staff support of a variety of education programs promoting science, math, engineering and technology in California schools. We make educational investments in communities where Intel Corporation has a significant presence. Here in the southern San Francisco Bay Area, our geographic focus is on Santa Clara County, Fremont and East Palo Alto.

Our education activities focus on the areas of science, math, engineering and technology. Support is generally directed to broad-impact, programmatic initiatives such as: teacher professional development, educational opportunities for the disadvantaged, the universal use of technology in the classroom, and academic research. We generally do not sponsor special events, teams/clubs, or operating expenses, including student, teacher or classroom requests.

Generally we work through local school districts to identify high leverage, great-need opportunities to:

  • Improve science, math, engineering and technology programs
  • Development of young women and unrepresented minorities
  • Staff development in math science, and engineering and technology
  • Student development programs addressing pipelines into higher education and high tech fields
Strong programs exist with Santa Clara County Office of Education, Santa Clara Unified School District, Fremont Unified School District, San Jose School District, Alum Rock Union Elementary School District (Slonaker Academy has received special attention), Eastside Union High School District (Sciencepalooza), Mission College, San Jose City College, DeVry University, Heald College, San Jose State (the Engineering program and minority outreach receive focused attention), Stanford, University of California, Berkeley, Boys and Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley and the Peninsula (Intel Computer Clubhouses), Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME, teacher summer fellowship program), Students Recycling Used Technology (SVStRUT.org), Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA), and Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI, workforce development institutes).

Worldwide programs

The Intel® Education Initiative is a global, multimillion dollar effort to help realize the possibilities of science and technology in education. Intel develops and supports education programs that help meet the needs of students and communities worldwide through improving science, math, engineering and technology education; improving education through the effective use of technology in classrooms; and broadening access to technology and technical careers.

Employee resources for educational programs

Volunteer Matching Grant Program
For every 20 hours an employee volunteers in a school, the Intel Foundation will match those hours with USD 200 under the Volunteer Matching Grants Program. Employees can combine their hours to earn money for a school or Intel Computer Clubhouse. The schools receive the funds unrestricted to fit their needs.

California site employees know that when it comes to volunteering, diversity of projects is the key to success. During the 2006–2007 academic year, our employees combined their talents to raise USD 792,600 for more than 360 schools. Approximately 1,856 employees volunteered their valuable time accumulating 79,260 hours. Many hours have been spent in local classrooms mentoring students and helping teachers.

Matching Gift to Education
The Matching Gift to Education program encourages employees, employee spouses, and directors of Intel Corporation to make personal contributions to support education. Maximum match is USD 10,000 per calendar year per employee or per couple (employee and spouse). Intel Foundation will match qualified employee contributions to any accredited school in the United States that is either a four year college or university, technical or community college, K-12 school (elementary or secondary), school or university foundation (must have 501c(3) status with IRS). Both publicly funded and private nonprofit independent schools are eligible.
