Intel Arizona garners community giving and volunteerism awards
Valley of the Sun United Way – Spirit of Caring Award
Intel Arizona was recognized at a community forum by Valley of the Sun United Way with the Spirit of Caring Award. This is United Way's highest honor. The award is presented to the organization whose employees embody a passion for improving the quality of life throughout the community and is a champion for Valley of the Sun United Way.
Through employment opportunities, financial contributions, and volunteerism, Intel Arizona makes a positive impact on the surrounding community. Last year over 45 percent of Intel Arizona employees volunteered in our community and 41 percent of our employees made a charitable contribution through United Way. Both the time and the gifts are matched by the Intel foundation. This enables our employees to double the impact and make sustainable, positive change in our community.
"Intel employees share a true spirit of caring, compassion, and generosity that is shaping a brighter future for our community," said Merl Waschler, Valley of the Sun United Way President and CEO. "The support Valley of the Sun United Way receives from Intel employees is extraordinary and we would not be able to accomplish our work without your continued leadership," he added. Governor's Volunteer Service Award – large business
Governor Brewer and the Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism announced the winners of the 8th Annual Volunteer Service Awards. Ten recipients including Intel were honored with the award, which is considered to be the highest volunteer award in the state. Shelly Esque, Vice President, Legal and Corporate Affairs Director, accepted the award for Intel in the large business category for the company's outstanding volunteerism in 2008.
During 2008, Intel employees in Arizona volunteered over 140,000 hours. Many of those hours were matched by the Intel foundation through the Intel Involved Matching Grants Program. In April, nonprofit organizations received the matching grants totaling more than $620,000.
"The expansion of the Intel Foundation's Matching Grants Program could not have come at a better time. We are able to provide much needed funding to over 250 nonprofit organizations in Arizona by matching the employee volunteerism with monetary donations. It is heartwarming to know that we are now able to financially support organizations that have been long-time friends of Intel," said Renee Levin, Intel Community Relations Manager.
Governor's Volunteer Service Award – mentor
Geneve "Bubby" Thiesing was also honored with a Governor's Volunteer Service Award for her role as a long-time mentor. Bubby was nominated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBS) as Mentor of the Year. Bubby has been a "big sister" at San Marcos Elementary for over a decade and has had the pleasure of being matched with three "little sisters."
In a testimonial provided by Bubby to BBBS, Bubby stated, "Two simple words in the English dictionary can never be replaced, exchanged, or substituted—Thank you. My mom always reminded us to 'count your blessings.' This endeavor will consume my lifetime. Being a big sister in the school-based 'lunch buddy' program has given so much to be grateful for."
Congratulations to all the Intel employees that spend countless hours volunteering in the community. Your efforts make a difference in the communities where you work and live.
Intel receives presidential volunteerism award
In celebration of National Volunteer Week, Intel CEO, Paul Otellini, accepted the USA Freedom Corps Volunteer Service Award. President Bush presented the award in a private ceremony prior to his official remarks. "I believe strongly in the admonition, ‘To whom much is given, much is required.’ Those of you here today are living up to that noble calling. And you carry on the best traditions of American citizenship," said President Bush.
The Volunteer Service Award honors the hard work and dedication of those who serve in their communities. "Community involvement has been a critical element of Intel’s culture for each of our 40 years of existence." said Paul S. Otellini, president and chief executive officer of Intel Corporation. "Intel's efforts not only help improve the quality and fabric of local communities, but also provide a rewarding and meaningful experience for our employees. We are celebrating our 40th anniversary this year with a million volunteer hours and significant matching donations all focused at making a real difference."
About the Matching Program
Employees are encouraged to log their volunteer hours in the Intel Involved volunteer database. Through the expanded Intel Involved Matching Grant program (IIMGP), hours volunteered at most *501c3 organizations qualify for a monetary match. We recognize that employees are volunteering in the communities in which they work and live, now those community organizations can benefit from the employee’s service and a monetary match from Intel.
