Open Source Technology Center (OTC)

Open Source Technology Center (OTC) is specialized in Open Source Software development. In ICSC, we have over 50 engineers who collaborate with other Intel OTC engineers all over the world. We focus on the development of Linux Kernel, open source virtualization software Xen*, Linux device driver and Embeded Linux, and establish cooperation with the industry to provide support of Linux on the latest Intel technology and products.

Intel enables Linux* on new Intel® Architectures and platforms, including Intel® IA-32 and Intel® 64, Intel Itanium® Processor Family, network product and Intel ® Graphics Adapter..

Open Source Technology Center (OTC) is specialized in Open Source Software development. In ICSC, we have over 50 engineers who collaborate with other Intel OTC engineers all over the world. We focus on the development of Linux Kernel, open source virtual machine monitor Xen*, Linux device driver and Embeded Linux, and establish cooperation with the industry to provide support of Linux on the latest Intel technology and products.

The engineers in OTC offer continuous effort mainly on:
Linux Core Enabling:
Make sure Linux run smoothly on all Intel Architectures, Including IA-32/Intel® 64, and IA-64.
Optimize Linux Kernel to achieve the best performance

Intel® Hardware Platform Support - provide Linux support and device drivers for Intel hardware. Including:
Intel® Pro wireless adapter Driver for Linux
Intel® Graphics Driver for Linux
ACPI Power Management
And so on

The Latest Intel Technology on Linux support
Our main program is the Enabling for Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT). Besides the para-virtualization solution the open source virtual machine monitor Xen* provided, the engineers in OTC developed the full virtualization solution for Xen* by fully utilizing Intel® Virtualization Technology.

OTC has collaborated with the partners, especially the Linux OS distributors to deliver the latest Intel Technology to the users. We have certain programs and owners to enhance the communication and cooperation between Intel and the local Linux Vendors. Our collaboration including: Intel® Roadmap disclosure and technical review, regular engineer meeting, validation for major Linux OS distribution on Intel platforms to make sure those distributions run smoothly on Intel® platform with best performance.

As a part of Open Source Community, we follow the open source software develop model in our work. Furthermore, we hope to communicate, share and collaborate with all the local fans and developers of open source software.

Intel Virtualization Technology Enabling

The virtualization is quickly becoming a mainstream technology thanks to the processors that supports Intel® Virtualization Technology. Intel® Virtualization Technology not only enhanced the proven benefits of virtualization but also enabled the hardware based solution of full virtualization. Intel Virtualization Technology simplifies the system management. Users do not need to have a modified guest OS to be run in the virtualization environment. This solves the difficulities of modifying the source code for Windows user before a para-virtualizaed Windows is available, and also saves considerable effort for Linux user to keep upgrading and testing kernel which is constantly changed.

OTC has collaborated with Xen* Community as the key developer, offering the full virtualization solution based on Intel Virtualization Technology.

In ICSC, more than 10 engineers from OTC has already evolved to be one of the most effective  development teams in Xen* Community. With the industrious and distinguished contribution of these engineers, Both Linux and Windows are able to operate on all Intel platforms (including IA-32, Intel® 64 and IA-64) with high stability, performance and multi-processor support. Therefore, we believe the stable and mature open source virtualization solution would be achieved through our collaboration and efforts in a near future.
