Antarctica — How can students attending the only school on Antarctica get the quality education they need, plus keep up with news and information? The school—Escuela N°38—at the Julio A. Roca Base Esperanza research center in Antartida Argentina provides an intense educational experience. The students, children of researchers from around the world, represent a multilingual, multigrade challenge for the two assigned teachers. The Internet, satellites, donated equipment, and Intel® Teach to the Future training help the teachers make sure that children attending the only school on the white continent stay in touch with the world.
Teachers at the school must be accredited to teach all subjects in a K-12 curriculum, be fluent in multiple languages, and be married to each other. Training these select teachers to use the latest technology is no small challenge. When winter temperatures hover near -45° C for months, satellite and the Internet are the only means of communicating with the outside world. With the support of the Intel Teach to the Future program, master teacher Monica Madoni, herself a former Escuela N°38 teacher, will use the Internet to provide Teach to the Future training to teachers at the research base.
