Intel® Educate Future Scientists - Foster a Spirit of Research and Innovation in Classrooms

To introduce the Science teachers to the new curriculum of Intel® Educate Future Scientists a three days pilot training program with 18 teachers from the Federal Directorate of Education was held at Islamabad, at the Pakistan Science Foundation. The timings were 9:00 am - 2:00 pm.

The focus of the initiative is to help science teachers present their curricula from an inquiry-based perspective to help foster a spirit of research and innovation among their students. The program consists of seven Modules; comprising inquiry based learning, facilitating scientific inquiry from the class room to the science fairs.

The teachers attending the course appreciated the new course as some of them had already gone through the earlier version of science teachers training course content the “Students as Scientist” course. The Intel® Educate Future Scientists Program is designed to help science teachers present their curricula from an inquiry-based perspective to help foster a spirit of research and innovation among their students.

The inquiry based activity modeling a “Top” created much interest and highlighting the three types of inquiries was understood well by the participants. The Module on “process of scientific inquiry” was appreciated the most. The experimental cards activity was new for the participants and they appreciated the different three categories subject cards.

The third day was utilized to introduce F2F “Inquiry in the Science Classroom” from the Intel Teach Elements series of courses. Inquiry in the Science Classroom is an e-learning course for teachers of students in grades 3 to 8 (ages 9 to 13), that explains and demonstrates the inquiry process in depth with interactive activities and locally relevant classroom examples.

“I experienced the Intel Inquiry in the Science Classroom. This on line course is an excellent resource for teachers as it allows us to have a good insight to the Science fairs and eventually the ISEF, and training of how teachers can participate. It’s a very practical, hands-on course which allows students to develop a deeper understanding of Innovation in Science”, said one of the teachers.

The working on module fifth resulted in the development of Action Plans which were uploaded in the intel engage community group. Participants were grouped and each group developed their Action Plan, applying critical thinking to their selected topics. Some of them were able to attach the Action Plan and gave feedback. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto - Member Science, Pakistan Science Foundation from the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology as chief guest gave away the certificates to the teachers. While appreciating the program he said, “Technology is amongst the greatest tools to advance education and we need innovative programs, we are grateful to Intel who has provided a platform to inquiry among students”.
