Five-day training was organized by the Teacher Training Department of the Diocese of Raiwind Education System in collaboration with the Intel® Education Initiative in the last week of July 2008. The program garnered the participants towards gaining technology literacy and developing key 21st Century skills for classroom instructions. 16 participants took part in the course; 14 of which were from St. Peter’s High School while the rest were from Dar-ul-Mussarat, a school for special children.
Although some of the participants were familiar with the different technologies beforehand but they were not aware of their usage and implementation in a classroom environment.
The training began with emphasis on developing 21st Century Skills, after which the participants did a comparison of classrooms of yesteryears and classrooms of today. They discussed the pros and cons of Teacher-Centered instruction and Student-Centered Learning.
The participants also learnt the basics of computer and usage of internet. Using the internet for the first time was a very exciting moment for the participants as they discovered new avenues of information. The participants also worked on MS-Word and designed different products like certificates and question papers.
The workshop introduced the participants to power of multimedia. They were astonished by the amount of learning they can extend through presentations and make student learning more interesting and interactive. Teachers worked on MS-Excel where they learnt about spreadsheets and how they can help in minimizing workload to a large extent. Participants learnt making result sheets, getting totals, averages and percentages.
The last day was dedicated for working on the presentations and projects for the showcase in the evening. The participants worked diligently presenting results in various forms such as question papers, certificates, plans, multimedia presentations, result sheets and generation of email addresses.
Mrs. Resha Qadir Bakhsh (Member D.R.E.S Coordination Team), Rev. Nasim Fiaz (Member D.R.E.S Coordination Team) and Mrs. Rena Shakir (Principal, St. Peters High School) were the dignitaries to review the work of the course trainees. They immensely appreciated the hard work of the participants and thanked the trainer for extending such enlightening skills to the participants.
When asked for a feedback, teachers were extremely excited about implementing and using IT in their classrooms.
